UV Sterilizer Worth it or Not??

I had one during the time I had Dino’s. I had the type where the uv actually helped clear it up. Since being free and clear of Dino for sometime, I have removed the uv. I prefer less maintenance, less things of breaking and less expenses such as bulb replacement.

But I have seen successful reef tanks both with and without uv’s.

I know this is an old post, but did you notice any negative shifts when you removed the uv?
 
I know this is an old thread but has anyone asked what the purpose of the UV would be?

I've used a slightly oversized UV for ich management for over a year now. I've had no outbreaks and haven't lost a single fish in that time to ich (or anything else for that matter. I very occasionally see a lonely white spot on a fish so I know the ich is there, but it's managed . The cost and effort is worth it for me compared to the quarantine and treatment approach I had before I got it which was full hybrid prophylactic tank-transfer and medication. .

I can also tell you that it will take care of any water discoloration due to standard planktonic algae.

The right contact time and set up and it can do a whole range of useful things. I've not seen any negative effects.

As for dinos, I have had them come and go while the UV has been on the tank so I couldn't tell you if it did the job in that respect. Honestly, the most recent thinking I have read on this is that it's touch and go when it comes to whether it works depending on what type of dinos you have.
