i kinda want 1 cause everyone else has 1 but do i need 1 to me it seems like a bit of crud that keeps dinos away what else does it do

Provided the UV is properly rated for your size tank, then generally speaking, a slower flow through the UV is used for parasite/disease, a faster flow is used for algae control. What size tank do you have? Also, check out some UV videos from places like BRS.

my tank is 375 liters or atleast it will be when i set it up haha so it controls algae huh so its defo worth getting then

And….i wish i had planned my set up to include one. It is much more of a pain to install post setup, if you are a noob like me, and don’t even plan on needing or wanting one.

I did a lot of research and got one that would handle my system and then some to be on the safe side, maybe even too big for my system so I can get the most out of it.

It has kept my algae at bay and I haven’t had any sick fish…6 months in and happy with going UV.

Sorry-- I edited my post because I had the parasite vs. algae speeds reversed. Ugg. :(

Anyway, for a tank that size, given the expense of a quality UV (such as Pentair), I would say go with a nice skimmer first and see how you do.

I went with this one. It took me a few weeks to get in the US but it had good reviews. I went with the 850 not the 550
