On a herbie style overflow, where should I place my valve on that primary over line? I’d assume you shouldn’t place it right by the actual overflow box? Is there a rule of thumb in terms of distance? I see some people place that valve near the sump

Suggestions?

It is most commonly in the sump cabinet, above the sump water line where you can comfortably reach it to do your tuning!

I actually find mine more convenient when I'm working behind the tank.

That overflow box is rated for 2400 GPH, so a little bit of overkill for the system's needs (150 gallon tank). The combination of valves give me ultimate flexibility/control; I can tune the system in macro and micro ways.

There should never be a need for a valve on anything but the siphon channel (aka primary drain) in a correctly set up Bean Animal configuration…

Is there a standpipe height issue in the overflow box necessitating continuous use of the emergency channel to silence the overflow?

Well, I guess it's a long story. But it also helps with maintenance and testing. For example, when initially setting up the tank, I could close all 3 valves right there and fill the overflow box to the top; then I let it sit full for a couple of days and made sure water didn't leak between the box and the tank glass.

If my valves throw you for a loop, you'd probably think twice seeing my Seamless Sump System (if not familiar with it). Lol. 😆

Haha that makes sense! I suppose I just use pipe testing plugs in mine when I do my leak tests!

Yup! These are awesome! No need to modify the stand to squeeze a huge sump in!
