It makes the fact that we can ever detect anything in this hobby at the tenths or hundredths of a PPM level with all the other competing elements in seawater feel like magic.
(Chemists are wizards, is what im saying)

That’s what I was thinking too! Huge self esteem boost knowing that I had the same thought as a scientist!! :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

*educator, to be more precise.

Saltwater chemistry could be a topic at this conference.

Why I scratch my head when 1 ppm is noticed in RODI and alarms go off to quickly change filters. Especially without knowing what that 1 ppm represents.

I still think 1ppm is important. There are some things that you wouldn’t want 1ppm of.

Like copper or phosphates. :)

Yet placed in perspective, that 1 ppm copper on top off or replacement likely not going to impact overall system. Copper does exist in NSW and so does phospate yet I doubt most systems have 1 ppm copper existing as 100% off that filter no longer being 100%. Plus that 1 ppm could be further filtered through copper and phosphate removing compounds if that's really a concern and should last longer than having to go change out main RODI components at the first sign of that 1 ppm.

I sometimes wonder if RODI sellers promote this fear mongering to get users to spend sooner than was realistically expected.

There's radioactive material that would be dangerous to humans in that amount. 1ppm isn't much, and the dose makes the poison, but some things are nasty.

(Though, worth noting that some people have happy, healthy corals at 1ppm phosphate. It's hardly on the level of, say, ammonia.)

Really, the dose makes the poison. .8 micrograms or 0.00000008 grams of botulinum toxin is fatal by inhalation. Considering the average human weight is 62 kg that's 0.00000012 PPM or .12 PPT.
