I have a frag of war favite on a frag plug sitting on my sandbed. Will this coral extend its skeleton upon itself or will I need to attach it to rock in order for it to grow?

It’ll grow as long as it has proper lighting, nutrition and water parameters. Doesn’t have to be on a rock to grow. I have a Christmas Favia frag sitting on the bottom glass in my BB. It’s close to a rock. I’m doing it as an experiment to see if it’ll grow to the rock or not.

They will grow faster on rocks. But they can grow both ways.

I’ll add that it’s advised to keep new corals in the sand at first (even SPS) to help acclimate them to your lighting. Keeping a favite there won’t hurt. Even in the long term. Just make sure to use a turkey baster or something to blow sand out of its mouths.
