Yeah, and I'm in Finland! :D I guess this depends on the temperature of the apartment, but at least I don't need it even during the winter, and definitely not during the summer.
what?! I was expecting you to be in Australia or something. I've got a space heater for my home office (where the tank will be going) as my hands get freezing during the winter otherwise! Though I do that to avoid heating an entire house when I'm the only one home.

We have district heating in our building (like almost half of the buildings in Finland), so it helps :)

While Tunze Silence is a great return pump, I decided to switch to Vectra S2 due to controllability. Also, no need to run this on full power and makes it easier to drive enough water through the roller mat.

Combined ammonium bicarbonate dosing is working extremely well with vodka, maybe there is some bacterial supercharge which makes frags to grow. Three week growth below, maybe this is how it should be?

A couple of additions from Eurocorals: EC Blue Candle, EC Akil’s Milky Way Galaxy, EC Blue Monster, EC Pinky n D Brain.

IMG_5084.jpeg

Also ordered a bunch of 100ml pipette bottles from Amazon, and put most of the Triton or Oceamo traces in those - wannabe ReefMoonshiner :D

Probably the best buy of the year, Squidgly grabber (https://www.squidgly.com/). I was hesitant to order a grabber from US, since the customs and other fees are pretty hefty to Finland. On top of that, UPS had managed to break the handle during shipping.
IMG_5048.jpeg

I was pretty disappointed and contacted Squidgly by email. Ariel from Squidgly send me a new grabber since the broken one was unusable. I received a new version of the grabber after one week wait - this is what I can call a great service! I ordered three different tips to grabber, one regular, a frag tip, and a longer SPS tip.
IMG_5220.jpeg

The grabber itself is considerable update to my bulky Maxspect Coral Gripper. The best example is saving 90€ frag/minicolony from EuroCorals this morning. The frag had dropped behind the aquascape, and it would have been impossible to get it out by hand, or with any other grabber. I put the tip to a different angle (unique feature of Squidgly), and just blindly reached behind the rocks. And low and behold, the frag resurrected from behind the rockwork - just saved a big chunk of grabber cost :D

IMG_5218.jpeg IMG_5216.jpeg

The grabber is also very handy if you get algae from places where you can't reach by hand.

IMG_5148.jpeg IMG_5149.jpeg

Highly recommended, great company and product!

Operation - catch the goby has started, seems to be mainly rubbing itself to acros, with not so nice results 🤣

IMG_5385.jpeg

I hope the Nyos trap works, a friend had a good idea of putting a frag instead of food to catch the trouble maker 😀 Maybe try that later. IMG_5389.jpeg

Goby removed succesfully, some evening shots of frags with a filter.

The other Luxdium Hydra power had apparently an electrical failure (which blow the fuse and left the power out from the tank for two hours while away), so decided to order ATI Straton Flex 102 G2. Hopefully they are as good as Luxdiums 🙂 8990043c-570a-4cf8-9e66-31df142c7994.jpeg

I had a unfortunate event of electric failure (during vacation) on the other Luxdium Hydra light (light itself or power source), which flipped the fuse. The same fuse is (was) connected to all power sockets where all the equipment are connected.

Luckily we were just driving back, and noticed that all the equipment had dropped out of the grid simultaneously. Pretty nerve wrecking to watch from web camera that the tank is completely dark, with no water movement :D
IMG_5359.jpeg

Luckily the tank was only 1,5h without electricity, and nothing was lost. The episode was a good reminder to upgrade some sockets to a different fuse, and to upgrade lights. So instead of Luxdium Hydras and OG Primes, I I ended up ordering ATI Straton Flex G2, which is supplemented with AI Blades I had already with Hydra/Prime combo.
IMG_5467.jpeg

The program goes now from blues to full spectrum, and back to extra-pop during the evening. Not necessarily bettter than Luxdiums, but definitely much more light coverage (esp. with Blades).

Looks like the DIY-zeoreactor with Tunze return pump is working ok. No need to shake anything, just turn the smart plug on, or just using a timer of the smart plug to give rocks a good shake 😅

One very noticeable difference is a quite pronounced polyp extension by the mulm.

Zeogun is working extremely well together with Special Blend and Nature's Ocean Bio-Activ aragonite. No more other bacteria dosing for me thank you :D

I rinse zeorocks 2-5 min every 2-3h , let them incubate overnight, and start again rising the mulm in the morning.

The experience with Nature's Ocean Live sand was so good that made "bactoballs" by storing Maxspect Bio-Sphere balls with small amount of live sand.
IMG_5572.jpeg
I throw in few balls every week where they are rinsed the same time with zeolite.

IMG_5658.jpeg

PE is super good, in some of the staghorn frags I cannot see the body of the coral. Also milmeporas (and lps) seem to be enjoying themselves. A few examples:

Vacation season again with high high ph syndrome - this time I thought I do something different.

My regular tank pH varies between 8.0-8.4 (CO2 scrubber on), but when we (two humans and one dog puppy) leave for a vacation the pH can go up to 8.9-9.0 in the end of the day (even if I remove the CO2 scrubber altogether). I have not noticed any major impact on coral health, except much higher alkalinity consumption and faster growth during the same time. However, this high pH could be very problematic in terms of potential precipitation, and ammonia production.

I found that an XL CO2 bag (used in green rooms) purchaced from a local plant shop keeps the tank pH from rising above 8.6 while we are away. I keep the bag in the kitchen, not directly next to the tank. Might not work for really big apartments, or you will need a few more of these bags :D

That is some very high pH! Is that only from using kalk and having the fuge?

Hi! Yeah, I'm using kalkwasser (1,9 liters during nighttime ), but no fuge anymore. Most likely the air exchange is pretty good in our apartment. Also the lights (ATI Straton Flex + Blades) which seem to drive pH up during the day. Actually, the comment on growth might be just bias from not being at home at looking at the corals constantly :D

The CO2 bag worked great for two weeks keeping the pH at 8.6 max - a great antidote for a "vacation syndrome" due to limited CO2 availability! I feel much more comfortable having pH at 8.6 vs 8.9 as earlier. Now that the two humans and one puppy are back at home, the pH will most likely drop to normal 8.1-8.4 range by tomorrow.

Also, I bought Canon R8 with a 28-70mm lense, and had to take some practice shots under the blue lights. Definitely need to consider a macro lense at some point :) IMG_0178.jpeg IMG_0177.jpeg IMG_0170.jpeg
