depends on livestock, feeding, dosing, etc. it varies for everyone. just one of the many things you’ll have to find out via trial and error. and testing.

Its like asking how long is a piece of string :confused:

Some do continuous water changes, some folk don't do them at all.
A commonly read regime is 10% weekly

All depends on tank system and a lot other 10 or 20% weekly or bi weekly is normal but I do 10% every 3 months if sump is dirty if not then I don't but what works for me could destroy someone else's reef

The best ‘standard’ advice is 10% which doesn’t upset the water chemistry to much in the system.

If you do to much, say more than 20-25%, you may upset the water chemistry depending on the existing water and the new water parameters.

But, everyone is different according to system, lifestyle etc.

Personally I’ve gone from 10% weekly to around 18% each 4-6 weeks and this is getting longer as the system matures further

It is so cool that we all do alike and yet different.

I kind of see it as knowing our tanks and when to listen to them in a sense of water changes.

I vary from a 5% to 30% depending on what it tells me including the span between w/c.

Often times your coral will let you know. Plus, you have to remember that many valuable trace minerals etc. become depleted through fish respiration, chemical reactions and filtration. Moreover, by getting in the habit of performing a water change, you are diluting/reducing the amount of contaminants, turbidity, nitrates and phosphates and other variables that have a negative effect on your tank. Because of this it is always good to atleast do a small water change weekly.

It is going to depend on what is in the tank and how heavy the bioload is.

I have two systems, 200 gallons, and 30 gallons. On the 200g system I do a 15g water change every 2-3 weeks. Last year life got hectic and I didn't do water change for about 8 months. The 30g system I change 4-5 gallons every week.

It didnt start out this way. I was doing 15-20% water changes almost weekly on the 200. I was combating cyano and some hair algae so water changes were needed. The 30g tank got 3 gallon changes twice a week until the system settled down.

Right now I'm doing water changes to replenish trace elements than to remove nitrates. Both of my systems are lightly stocked and have enough surface area to have complete nitrogen cycles.

This has been a game changer for my maintenance schedule make water once a week. Over the course of the the auto aqua aws changes the water for me. My favorite piece of tech on my tank, should have bought sooner :)
