I’m unsure how to tell tbh, I had purchased it as a female, and my red fin fairy as a male. I’m just assuming it’s stayed that way. Might give it a shot if I can find the right one.
Nope, wrasses transition from female to male. How bright are her colors?

Also not sure how long they take to transition, but I’ve had all of them maybe a couple months now

Transitioning or early phase male. Not a female any longer. That's a little further along than mine was when I got him but not much.

Ahh so probably not a good idea to add a leopard then. :(

My melanurus was the first of the 4 and he was already a male, although early phase like yours appears to be. Mine was fine. If you do, I'd do it sooner rather than later.

With that said, my Leopard was added nearly a year after the mel.

Ahh okay. I’m looking around for someone reputable that has them now.

Is your melanurus a jerk to anything in the tank currently? He leaves the Redfin and Possum alone?

Edit: Also after further reviewing the pictures you've posted it is likely either still a female but close to transitioning or a very early phase male. At least I'm fairly sure.

Is the only indicator the vibrancy of its coloration? But no it doesn’t even notice them there really. Too busy hunting for food lol

The three stripes on the back tell me it's no longer female. The brighter colors tell me it's definitely male. However, the straight lines and lack of bright colors on the face tell me it's still early phase most likely.

@Slocke I'm not steering him wrong with a Leopard right?
My melanurus was a bit aggressive with my leopard. Not brutally but enough for me to swap its tank. Thought that was a full male Mela

So just keep an eye for too much aggression?
