My display is only ~70G, I have an Algae Turf Scrubber and a skimmer, but running both bottoms out N and P so I just run the skimmer without the collection cup for gas exchange.

Heaters on Ranco, calcium reactor, multiple skimmers, fuge if there is room, flow pumps and return pump. That is all.

You don't have to use a skimmer, but you have to do all of the things that it does in other ways. This is not only removing dissolved organics, but also getting out heavy metals (in foods) and gas exchange. Skimmer does all of these nicely in one package.
