Starting a new tank and having doubts about using a skimmer, refugium.
So curious what you guys are using.

My display is only ~70G, I have an Algae Turf Scrubber and a skimmer, but running both bottoms out N and P so I just run the skimmer without the collection cup for gas exchange.

150g display - 200ish total volume

Socks, Skimmer, dual heater with inkbird and two mp40s for flow

350 gallons I use a skimmer and mp40’s… apex with trident to test and that’s it! Kiss method always worked for me.. “keep it stupid simple”

Heaters on Ranco, calcium reactor, multiple skimmers, fuge if there is room, flow pumps and return pump. That is all.

You don't have to use a skimmer, but you have to do all of the things that it does in other ways. This is not only removing dissolved organics, but also getting out heavy metals (in foods) and gas exchange. Skimmer does all of these nicely in one package.

125 gallon with 40 breeder sump.

1 MP40
1 "Gyre"
Standard heaters
ASM skimmer
Aqualifter pump on a light timer for adding kalk and mostly taking care of topping off
Manually test salinity, alk...once in a blue moon a few other things

Things not listed: T5 lights, Blue line return pump

I think that's it.
