What is this?

Got back from a short trip and one of my torches is almost all gone. I noticed this reddish stuff on the side. Not a great pic, but was hoping that someone may have an idea of what it may be.

Foraminiferans. They should not bother the coral.

Here is a slightly better pic. Whatever it is, it's jard to the touch. Is it a coincidence that the torch head on that side is the one that died?
