This could be an informitive thread to many, especially newer reefers that are deciding on the best means and combinations of such means to export nutrients from their aquarium systems. What am I talking about? Filters! Biological, mechanical and chemical filtration is used in all of our tanks (for the most part) in one form or another to export nutrients that we import via feeding, source water, etc. There are obviously so many things being used today; Protein skimmers, refugiums with macroalgae, deep sand beds, live rock and live sand, denitrators, algae scrubbers, probiotic systems, granular ferric oxide (GFO), etc.
So... what do you use in your system(s)?
These are some other points to include that will determine how much "exporting" is really necessary, and would also be helpful to include:

These are some other points to include that will determine how much "exporting" is really necessary, and would also be helpful to include:
- What is the size of your tank?
- What do you keep in it (fish/coral/invert)?
- How often and what are you feeding?
