The way things were done 20 years ago (by TOTM winners especially) are just as good, if not better than the way they're done today... Better cameras, LEDs, and Instagram haven't changed what was figured out long ago. Strong diffuse light, high import/export of nutrients = success. Technology has advanced but the overall biology is the same.

In fact I do. I live on well water. Don’t have to worry about chlorine but other baddies. It’s ok. Everytime I see my nitrates and phosphates drop too low, instead of dosing, I just unzip figure out the angle and pee in it again. People laugh but it saves money on dosing.
Im not sure I can be that bold.lol
My wife would have a fit if I rinsed the skimmer cup out in the kitchen sink knowing I pee’d in the aquarium.
The logic isn’t there but I’m sure you understand what I mean.
For the record… I have my own slop sink.
(Only do that when she’s not around)

Well, I've done it in 48 hours and reused my sand bed doing it.

Yes you do!
Maybe you do, but it shouldn't be touted as a hard rule because it's simply a suggestion. Proper animal husbandry and research are much more important than some pre-determined time period. A tank doesn't hit it's 6 month "birthday" and magically become habitable for anemones.

Stop taking the advice of people who have not shown you their actual reef tank and proven they have more than a few years of real world experience in this hobby.
How do you prove how many years you’ve had in this hobby? I’m just wondering

Reusing your sandbed should never be done.. especially if you’ve seen what reusing it can do (I lost around 16 fish due to reusing my sand bed)

This is going to trigger a lot of people however:

a 2’ diagonal path is enough room for a small wrasse that stays below 4” (I don’t mean the possums or cryptics)

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
