I also took it a step further about 8 or 9 years ago and threw out the skimmer so I am also running the tank with zero mechanical filtration and zero dosing. I do a 40-60% water change once every 4-6 weeks. 120g tank so the water changes are fairly significant but I kind of enjoy the manual labor once in a while after sitting in an office all day.

Back in the day... DSB's were the 'in' thing for a while. In the early 90's, we were importing Southdown play sand out of the south by the ton through Home Depot. My old 240 had a good 6" sand bed. 550 lbs of southdown sand :D

Healthiest reef I've ever owned. That tank would grow _anything_... for a while. 2x 400w Ushio 10k Halides + VHO actinic. Awesome... until it crashed. In my experience, DSB's are a ticking time bomb. That tank lasted 8 years. At that point, nitrates went through the roof.

I have what's become a fabulous dedicated cyano tank. I am sure that I also have the biggest patch of turf algae in Alberta, and skunk clowns that refuse to eat anything but flake and continue to nest in a bald rock now that their beloved patch of GHA has been eradicated. And even though the BTA is RIGHT. THERE. Call the Guinness people!!

A fellow reefer gave me 2 BTAs with a mated pair of maroon clowns (which he had for 10+ years) that was 8 years ago. Now I have 18+ (as of this AM) and the originals & clowns are still with me.

Nice looking tank. I do a 5% water change every other day on my 130L to keep alk up and just run a external filter with a skimmer.

Want to relive that? I have 250 lbs in original bags that has moved with me 3 times

A RUGF is a reverse undergravel filter. Mine is still running since 1971. :)
