What salt do you use?

I uses instant ocean purple bucket. I went back and forth a lot on this, but ultimately I have seen many many long time successful reefers who use it, and if it works for them, it can work for me. Bonus is that if I ever need it, Petco is just down the street, so I do not have to have it shipped.

Myself and one of the largest stores in my area tried this salt. We were very disappointed. Alkalinity was mixing significantly higher than advertised, calcium lower, etc. We sent individual ICP’s out and both came back confirming our at home tests. When we contacted DR Tim’s and provided our results along with the batch numbers we were told they were waiting for the French Lab to respond. We stopped using it shortly after.
Thank you for the info, I appreciate it!

Used Red Sea Black Bucket (Coral Pro) for the last year. Started mixing with Blue bucket to lower Alk last 6 months. Just switched to AquaForest Reef Salt with their pre-Black Friday sale and paid less than IO price for it. Bought enough for a year, provided I don't start another tank. :)

fauna marin...definitely has good iron content...we used to put steel wool in our power filters for a day or 2 way back in the day to increase iron..everything looked better with iron... macro and all...

Can I ask where you found the AF salt on sale?

I have been using the AF regular salt for the last year now, it's been a fantastic price at BRS, but that price has since gone up.

On the rare occasions when I buy salt - I rarely do water changes so a tub lasts a long time - I just buy what is cheapest at the time.

Any difference between brands is not noticeable with a 10% change, and by the time the tub is finished the params have settled where I want them due to 3 part dosing.

Sorry - got it from BRS during the 30% off sale. It sold out pretty fast but I think they took orders on backorder. I haven't received it yet so I'm hoping it arrives. They did take my money. :p

I've used so many over the years and have settled on Aquaforest. I never noticed any brand that made any considerable difference in terms of health of animals in the tank, I think it just depends what parameters you want, cost, convenience etc. Here is what I found with the ones I used:

Reef Crystals:
Good price and parameters, no negative issues with results in the tank inhabitants, easy to find everywhere locally. I stopped using it because of the brown crud it left in my mixing containers which led to more work for me cleaning.

Fritz Blue:
Good Price and results, but it didn't work out for me because I premix my salt in drums and store for couple weeks before using. I found the alk dropped quite bit if I stored it more than a couple weeks. If you don't have to store it, this would be a good option IMO. Mixes pretty clean. I've read some people say they ICP tested this salt and sometimes the parameters aren't consistant. However, as someone else mentioned earlier...when your changing 10-15% those are going to have minimal effect overall on your tank parameters.

Tropic Marin Pro:
Was a great salt, but the cost has risen so much so I went elsewhere. The time they had those bad made in Turkey batches and had limited availability afterwards pushed me away from them. It was a great salt though.

Aquaforest Reef: Found it mixes super fast and as clean as Tropic Marin. Parameters are good and seem to hold pretty well when in storage for over 2 weeks. Price is fantastic when on sale, and it goes on sale at least few times year at BRS. I just stock up when the sale comes. Only negative is there is no where locally that sells it, so availability can be an issue for me if I don't stock up.

These are just my personal experiences. Do what you will with it. Good luck!

It mixes so fast comes with ICP report and doesn’t leave any residue in my mixing bins!
