What size QT would you use for fish housed in a 75 gal? I’ve been using a 10 gallon since the beginning but I think I’m ready to go bigger. It’s really hard to keep the 10g stable, especially in winter when just 24 hours of evaporation is significant in a 10 gallon tank so I have to top off morning and night. I also feel bad for the fish that they are in such a cramped space. Especially if I want to QT more than one fish at a time. Thoughts?

Also, if I ever needed to pull all of my fish from the DT to hospitalize, I can’t imagine having them all in a 10g together. Feels like my melanurus wrasse by himself alone would take up the whole space (he’s full grown). Thanks for your advice and thoughts. Working on beefing up and changing my qt procedure

Calculate what? Water volume?

.00439 x LxWxH in inches.

I use a 10g (38l) QT for my 65g (244l) DT. I made my own ATO however from a plastic container and a float valve kit and also use that to raise salinity as needed. Mine doubles as a HT too. Currently it has two clowns in it being treated for what appears to be a bacterial infection.

The smaller volume reduces the amount of salt and medications etc you need to dose. 10g should be physically big enough anything you are going to put into your 75g DT. Mine is certainly big enough for my DT.

Here is mine so you can see the ATO.

Sorry for being really vague. :) What I meant was that i was surprised both responses were the same, that I should use 2 - 20 gallon tanks for my quarantine system and I was wondering whether it was experience or some other type of calculation that guided those recommendations. If it was some type of calculation, then I would use that on other systems in the future. Hope that helps. :)

Thank you for sharing!! I’ve considered getting an ATO for the 10 g. I think it is the guilt that the fish won’t have enough room coupled with concerns about ammonia levels that drive me to want a bigger tank. I do like the part about not needing as much salt or medication as well as it being so fast to clean and do water changes, but I worry for the fish stress level and health.

Thanks, they seem pretty good today. The female cleared up pretty quickly, even though she was the most affected. I’m not sure if her affected eye is going to function yet, but it seems clear from infection. The male’s eye stayed cloudy initially but seems to have cleared up today. Hopefully they will both go back into the DT next weekend.
