I used to keep macroalgaes of all types and the reason why is due to the natural looks and easy of care they hold. Unfortunately this ended up stopping and I now work with SPS coral (And a mixed LPS/Softie reef).
Though I will take any macros I get as hitchhikers!

I've got a RS 425 moderatly stocked, and I run chaeto in an Aquamaxx media reactor that I DIY'd in to an algae reactor. I only need to run it 5 hours at night and it keeps my nitrates in check.

I just removed a literal pound of chaeto from my 15 gallon sump.

How do I know it was a pound?
I weighed it.

The entire refugium space was completely PACKED with chaeto. I have a feeling this might be why my tank has been suffering really bad lately. The refugium was literally stripping everything out of the water column.

I used Caulerpa for over 10 years, I specifically like that it attaches to rocks and substrates and stays where you leave it. It was brachypus (sp?) and not taxfolia which is illegal in NSW. Never went sexual, never got out of control in the display.

I'm using Chaeto these days and it's working a charm. No gfo, no nopox/carbon, no lanthanum. Phosphates always under 0.1 and nitrates never over 6.

I have it under a prime fuge which makes it grow at almost unbelievable rates. The algae is only as good as the light.

Used to have chaeto, but found their rapid growth, and thus rapid absorption of nutrients, AND funny-looking shape to be weird in my sump so I changed to green/red algae such as Ulva, grape algae, Dragon’s breath, and mermaids tail to give the refugium a bit of variety and pizaaz! :)

I love both of those! How/where to get them? Under what water conditions/lighting can they grow?

I believe the best place to start from is with killerkosar they fairly hard do come by. They do well under the same parameters as you would for sps. Unfortunately I don’t have mines anymore.

I'm not sure if an ATS counts but you can find 99 percent of my algae there in the form of GHA. Nothing in the display or refugium except film algae.

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
