is there a certain maturity to my aquarium that I should wait for before I decide to add a clam?

You want a stable system. Calms will add a demand on ca, alk, mg that sometimes are not accounted for. Find out how yours is doing and numbers before trying them. I think I got my first clam 8-12 months into the hobby and had it for about 10 years. Just a matter of maintenance and stability.

After the pasta is done boiling, add the clams to your sauce. Then pour that over the strained pasta.
