Looking to fly down to the Caribbean this summer. I really want to experience and study a untouched beautiful reef. Maybe a place where most tourists don’t want to go to because of long and choppy boat rides etc.

Still in the planning phase so willing to all country/location ideas!

Highly recommend our little island of Culebra located 12 miles off of mainland Puerto Rico. You can take a ferry (1 hour long) or there are puddle jumpers (up to 8 people) that we fly. We have 7 beaches with half of them that have snorkel ready coral reefs, and nature reserves.
If you dive there is a whole another world open to you with the reef parks that are available. Flamenco Beach is a blue flag beach known for its clarity around the world and has been rated in the top ten several times.

Its a really laid back, sleepy island (7 miles x 3 miles) with 2,000 people on average focused on eco-adventure. We'eve been going there for 6 years and love it each time. So much so we bought a guesthouse, if you need a place to stay. There are no hotels or major store chains only local homes for rent and restaurants/bars!

If you dive check out our friends at:

Also there are several uninhabited keys (within 10-20 minute boat ride) around Culebra, such as Culebrita where the reefs, beaches are very impressive.

Thank you so much! This sounds super exciting! I’m going to do some more research!
Did the hurricanes effect the reefs?

Very Luckily the eyes of both Cat 5 hurricanes missed Culebra with direct hit (within 10 miles!). However they did still have sustained winds of 140mph+ and storm surge! I was there recently in January and observed some shallow sections where sea fans were affected, the deeper you went the less you noticed. I was surprised to see the acropora sections were still in good shape and the reefs are rebounding quickly! I was surrounded by a school of 15-20 squid on the Flamenco reef that was very cool.

I believe the video from CBS news was recently shot on a dive, where the reefs had minimal damage. The island 100% ready for tourist with 24/7 power and internet. We are going back in March will snap some photos to update.

I started diving when we lived in Puerto Rico almost 20 years ago...I never went to Culebra itself but I remember we had several dive sites near the island. Thank you so much for posting this video and reminding me of one of my favorite times and places!!!

Of course - Truly a magical island and people. Come on back! Tourism is the lifeblood of the island and the people are ready to show you an amazing time.
