Where do dead fish go?!?

I got another bluethroat trigger today about the same size as the missing one.
I put him in the tank after lights out.

He went straight to the rocks and hid but he had not been harrassed by my evil damsel yet.

Wish him luck.

Who knows. I might see two triggers in my tank someone next month.

I guess it was maybe 25 or 30 years ago I had a 250 gallon system It had real live rock from South Asia Tank a been up and running for about a year i guess. One night I had a blue hippo T'ang about the size of my hand disappear. Turns out I had a mantis shrimp

I had a 3" purple dottyback, active and healthy, busy excavating his home until the powerhead stopped one night. I got it fixed the next day, but I never saw him again. After waiting a couple of weeks I looked under every rock (45 gal tank) no trace, and never saw an ammonia spike. Nothing big enough to eat him, just the CUC.

It only took one fish in a year?

Yeah I am sure it was very small when It came in on the rock, tough shrimp though lived through the at least 10 day in the box travel and a 30 minute fresh water dip, there were many things in there for him to eat. Had to take all the rock out and break one to get him out.

Had a chromis die about 3 mo ago. It disappeared for 2 days and on the third I found it being devoured during the night (under my moon lights) by bristle worms (that I did not even know I had in the tank). By morning there was nothing left in the site of the carnage. I guess they are just doing what they are supposed to do! (However, I do not know if the above would apply to a 5"tang!).

I used to wonder the same thing... until I broke down a tank and found all the shriveled fish behind the tank, under the radiator/baseboard, along with quite a few glass shrimp that I used to feed the fish.
