I have a Red Sea Reefer 250 (36"L x 20"H x 21"W, 54 gallon display) mixed reef. I have SPS at the top and upper mid level and several various LPS. I would like to switch to Kessil lighting. Should I get one Kessil AP9X panel, two Kessil A360XE, or one Kessil A500X. The A500X claims to have a 36 x 36 spread.

I vote one ap9x or two 360xe. I think the mount height and side glare you’d have to have for the 36” spread would be frustrating with the 500. The 360s give you more control on placement, but the ap9x’s are nice out the box.

I have a 36"x24" 75 gallon tank with an AP9X over the top + a 30" reefbrite actinic. The latter fills in a bit better + adds some color pop. I find the combo works extremely well for mixed reef. I have lower light SPS on top / center (e.g. digitata), LPS mid / bottom (euphyllia, goni), and some softies at the bottom (ricordea, zoas). Also, I'm running the AP9X at 25%, so it is very powerful. This level is perfect for my mixed reef setup and the fan runs very quietly. I also love how slim it is, it practically disappears in my setup.

A very beautiful tank. Did you make the partial hood/canopy to mount your light?

I have a 5 foot tank and I got pretty close to getting away with a single AP9X so you should be fine. I did add a single reefbrite strip to run the kessil on the whiter side and help with shading. You will need to supplement due to shading.

Hey thanks! Yes, a friend made the stand and the bookshelves to fit my office but the lights are just mounted to the bottom of the bookshelves on the wall. Also worth noting, as you can see, I sit right next to the tank all day working and the lights are not in my eyes and the light spill is very minimal. This was a must - I tried other lights and most of them just lit up my desk and shined in the corner of my eyes. The kessil is very well behaved - I see nothing from it directly when I look at it in spite of it being over 12" higher than eye level. The Kessil is mounted with these little metal bars I found on Amazon that just happen to exactly fit the spacing of the mounting holes on the top of the kessil so I didn't have to hang it or anything.

+1 on supplementing due to shading and color, this looks very similar to my approach!

What is that mounting system you have? Commercially available or do it yourself?

1010 extrusions from tnutz.com mounted to studs. light mounts were 3D printed. The reefbrite mount is a reefbrite single bracket cut into 2.
