which return pump is the quietist and best option

Having replaced the pump and controller with a new one I have a further problem and wonder what the reasons may be. I am on the verge of buying a top end pump but before I do, the display tank water level is impossible to set, it varies by as much as 3/4 inch in as little as 15 minutes. This is having not touched the gate valve overnight I can watch it vary. Is this symptomatic of a pump which can't hold flow rate accurately ? I can't think of any other reason all is brand new nothing is blocked etc !

What tank do you have and how long has it been running?

UNS r60 reef tank running for a couple of weeks , chemically maturing.

Is the water raised all the way inside the overflow? It should be slightly trickling into the emergency drain.

Thank you, someone has just explained that to me and instantly a huge difference, I guess should have been obvious but it wasn't to me ! Hopefully over the setup hump now, have just introduced ammonia and live bacteria so some monitoring and waiting for a while. Good wishes.

Not your fault at all, we are working on some more content on how to fine tune our reef systems out of the box. Reach out anytime with questions!

The problem of varying DT levels has returned, however I've identified the pump speed control is erratic so I am chasing my tail. Tomorrow I intend to order something high end and controllable perhaps a red sea G2 and controller or the Echotech pump. The one I have is okay but not for holding head heights, I guess the speed control is built down to a price ! Comments and recommendations welcome ! I do however want it to have a feed mode to hold the water in the DT. The reef octopus looks good but the controller to do that looks expensive !
I'll get there hopefully whilst I have some hair left !

I am going to add one more pump to my list. VarioS pumps.
I've used a couple in the past and they have been very quiet and long running.
I currently am going to swap out a RD3 100 watt pump with a VarioS-10 pump soon. ( just as soon as I can find the courage to break open the system.)

I'm running a VarioS 2 pump for my return. It is quiet and smooth. I don't hear it running at all.

Would this be OTT for my 175 Litre UNS R60 return in terms of flow and how low I would have to run it ?
