Did anyone ever get this from Tidal Gardens when they had it available? I would love to track down a piece of this. It’s beautiful.

Looks like a standard Aussie Ice Fire Echinata...........they are fairly common. Keep checking around online vendors and reefers selling frags on forums.

If you want to gamble on a colony, Live Aq. Divers Den sells them for about 200, but the wild colonies are notoriously difficult to keep alive.

Even as aquacultured corals they are difficult to keep alive long term.

I think you can find a variant of that pretty easily.

My friend has one where he was thinking of naming it white walker, not this acro you have shown here. In the years he's had it, it's all white with white polyps. You'd think it's dead or bleached, but nope. It just doesn't color, even from day one while all else in his tank is thriving. I wish he'd snap a pic.

For what it’s worth those echi don’t keep white branches in 90% of tanks. Some people can get them to have nice whiteish areas near the tips and new growth but they still get lots of green in them. That piece I would guess cake straight off the reef and was photographed before it acclimated to a tank.

This is my wild from divers den that I lost in tank transfer after having for 2 years . When it’s in bloom , it rivals even a milli in polyp extension

OP - if you are really looking for one , I know @Big E has one of the most impressive echinatas I have ever seen and it’s aquacultured .Of course if @Big E decides to frag though

I found some (based on everyone’s pointers) that I want to try. This will be my first acro. Am I asking for trouble getting this from a system running metal halide when I run LED?

How much light and flow do they like? Mine isn’t growing much, encrusting a little bit but no upwards growth in 6 months.

Medium light of around 200 PAR . Medium flow too .
Honestly it’s a finicky acropora and sometimes just takes a lot of time to adjust . Now if it’s an aquacultured one like Tyree one , it takes off easily . Not the wild ones though

Well I can’t tell you as I haven’t run leds . But I haven’t seen impressive colonies of ice fire echinatas under leds yet . Lots under halides and T5s though .
It’s very susceptible to swings and especially flow changes in my experience .
As often I can be wrong which I am more than often . So take my advice with a grain of salt .

No harm in trying and may be you will have the best echinata colony ever !!!

Haha Thanks for the honesty. It’s not an “Ice Fire”. I found a few of those and they are more cream than white. This is just labeled “Aussie Echinata” and has a nice white I can hopefully keep. If not, maybe I can convince the wife to let me upgrade the lighting this Christmas.

They can vary in how much white the have in the body......some have more blue down the length of the branch while others are more brown or green.

Sometimes you just have to look for one that has more white by seeing colony pictures and not just a branch tip.

Keep it low........they don't need a lot of light.......good luck with it.

OP, this is a really bad idea for a first acro. These are not typically easy to keep.

Understood. However, there’s only three others I like and this is the least costly. This, Spyro the Dragon, Fox Flame and Sunday Driver.

I don’t want to buy something else that I don't plan to keep in the long run. I’m pretty rural so I don’t have many trade options around me.

Buy what you like . You will learn slowly what you can keep and what not . Only experience can teach you that !
But I would suggest not to go after names only ! The world of acros is so vast that it’s hard to believe you like only 4 :)

I probably need to spend more time browsing. Just like the “White Walker” being an Aussie Echinata. I just need to learn the secret words. Haha

I put a wild collected ice fire frag in my new (3 week old) 20 gal cube a couple of months ago. It's encrusted and doing well near the top under a hydra26hd maxed out. It's done well despite a couple of alk spikes that lightly bleached couple of other "hardy sps" fortunately they are all still with me. It's a bit of a low nutrient set-up. Not by choice. But I do weekly 75% water changes.
It was a little brown when I got but it's coloured up nicely and is white / blue as in all the pics you see. Mine has blue polyps though.
