Why do people want bigger tanks?

Because i will upgrade sooner or later if i didnt have a big tank for the fish i have to have (500g). Large angels (ie French), large tangs (achilles), large triggers ( pinktail, clown). Just want them to have as much space as possible. Also need latge tank to have about the 45+ fishes that are my favorites

My personal opinion bigger tank could keep more variety of fish and corals,as well as keeping water parameters more stable. BTW, depends on budget and space that give tank looks nice and easy for any maintenance...🙏

I'm quite happy with my little 40G for now...but I can definitely see wanting my next one to be bigger, mostly just so the size isn't a limiting factor when choosing which types of fish I can get. I also initially wanted to limit my tank size to keep water changes small...but to be honest for some reason I find it easier to mix up larger batches of water than to try and do a change with a 5 gallon bucket.

Why do people want bigger tanks?

For me it's mostly been about more room for fish and bigger fish. I love tangs, the way they swim and variety but they need plenty of space if you want to house multiples!

Some want a bigger tank for more corals. Some as a reefing status symbol...maybe?

What do you think?
Mostly for your reasons but my love for Tangs have been destroyed I loved my yellow but my Vlamingi id a bully and a killer. The main reason is that I feel they are actually easier to maintain

I originally wanted to go but to get tangs (largest tank I've ever had was 55 gallons) to get a tang but my plan is to get an IM200 next year and now my motivation is to be able to add a mated pair of spotted mandarins to my mated pair of green mandarins!

I guess I'll still throw in 1-2 tangs but I plan on going smaller fish like chromis, flasher/fairy wrasses and anthias to give the illusion the tank is larger than it really is!

The bigger the tank the more money I can spend, lol.

Actually larger systems allow more of everything!

I actually considered going with a 400g+ system but went with a 150, 50, and my new 112, for the fish room.

I have more flexibility with multiple systems. I can keep nems in a seperate system and do not have to worry about them wandering around.

For me bigger tanks meant I could combine a few smaller 20-30g tanks into one. Then a few 75g tanks into a 180g. Maybe one day there will be a second 180 followed by them being combined into a 400g?? Or I could skip the middle man this time . Haha 🤣

Im running out of room over here and I would love to have some bigger tangs back in my main display. Had to remove them once they get over 5" because they break too many corals. Currently have the big guys living in my grow out tub.

I’d have a Polo Reef Andrew Sandler type setup if I had the space, time and money but that won’t happen anytime soon. There are many factors for wanting a bigger tank and I think they all come into play to some degree, more corals/fish, more stability, because you have the space/time/money, peer pressure from the reefing community (you’re not cool if don’t have a big tank or having the largest tank you can afford is what you’re suppose to do), status symbol like you said.

For me it was about more coral and room for coral to grow, nothing to do with fish.

Now that I have it setup it's more about the fish! I've added 3 tangs, 6 anthais, and 8 damsels since and am loveing them.

More space for variety and number of fish/coral. More area for fish to swim which i like to watch. I really like the visual presentation of a large viewing panel. 300-450 gallon is ideal for me within what i consider reasonable size and expense limits. With no limits my house would be a public aquarium with walk through tunnels.

I never thought that I would go bigger than my 56g column tank but then after 9 years cleaning the glass in a tank that tall became an issue. Since I needed to buy a new cabinet and tank to remedy the tall tank issue, I decided to fit the longest tank in the space I had which was a 75g. This was perfect since there are bristletooth tangs, foxface, a host of wrasses and dwarf angels that all can go in a 75g. However a 75g is not so huge that nano fish get totally lost like masked gobies or citrin gobies. Can dabble in both worlds some. Also manual water changes are still manageable, especially if done weekly.

For me #1 reason is to have a variety of fish especially tangs. Other reason is you can do a lot more with scaping with the larger format and lastly to provide more room for more corals to grow out.

That said, I've seen amazing tanks come in all sizes.

more or bigger fish for me. I decided that an aquarium looks “grand” at the 5 foot mark and up. Unfortunately I decided this after I just bought a 4 foot tank.

There is something just impressive about larger tanks. I could have had my forever tank at 5 x22”x22”. 130g but i went with 100

I decided to go to a 180g as I started with a 20g and with my love of all things "coral" it was filled up and cramped in no time..so I stepped up to a 75g tank..and LOVE that tank, BUT again, it fills up quickly with both rock structure and corals, and I'm just not totally satisfied with some of the other things I want in the tank yet, so Finally stepping it up to a 180g tank.
