I’ve searched and haven’t found an equivalent, but am curious if anybody else has tried this. I previously had built a hanging canopy for my peninsula, but found that it did not limit the light spillage enough, and did not provide enough working room to access the tank. I also have a lid from Top Lids for the tank. In my house I had recently replaced a number of window blinds with adjustable blinds from this site called SelectBlinds (unaffiliated), which were surprisingly cheap, and very easily adjusted. I had the thought that if I mounted them to the ceiling surrounding the tank, I could replace the canopy for my tank, and since they could be set very high or very low I would have the ability to give myself lots of working space above the tank if needed, or blackout a side of the tank if I was watching TV or taking pictures of my family in the living room (my wife’s request).
Below is the old canopy and the end results, and I am incredibly happy with it. I do have an awkward crossbeam that I had to get a bit creative mounting across. It looks ugly, but should be an easy fix. Other than that though, the blinds are able to block as much or as little light into the room as possible, so the wife is happy. I can easily work on the tank, so I’m happy. The total cost was $650 for all 3 shades to cover my Cade 1500P (59”x30”x60”) in a double thick cell. I’m honestly pretty shocked at how well it has worked, and am pretty surprised I haven’t seen it before. Let me know if you have any questions! Ignore the aiptasia and cyano!
