The only reason there aren’t more women in reefing is because they don’t want to admit that their husbands/bf/guy friends silly hobby that costs way too much money is actually amazing ;Hilarious

my wife actually loves reefing and wants to start a tank of her own at some point, she just doesn’t know it yet.

glad to see more people interested in this great hobby and on R2R!

I began keeping FO set ups in college in 1994. Ouch, that was a while ago. I moved to reefs in 2003. Never looked back. I have volunteered at our local public aquarium for almost 7 years (till an injury stopped me) and run an outreach program for kids/adults to learn about coral reefs.
I am super passionate about it and my friends and family think I am nuts. I even wrote a children's book to help me with my outreach programs.
When I first started going to groups, I was usually the only woman present. Nice to see so many more women around now.
I also love seeing the young kids on this site. Too cool to start so early.

Lady reefer right here! Been doing this since about 1993. I've seen a lot of changes...but one thing that hasn't changed a lot is how many women are in the hobby. Definitely need more ladies reefing.
I met my (now) husband of almost 14 years at MACNA Boston way back when.
We have a 300 gallon SPS dominant reef and a Waterbox Frag anemone set up.
Even though we met through the hobby, I'm the one that babies the tanks and does 99% of the purchasing and maintenance. And I'm totally okay with that! :)
I also have my bachelor's in marine biology but don't work in the field anymore.
Oh wow. post some pictures of that SPS reef :)

Hi! I love it! I have been in love with the ocean since I was a kid. I always wanted a saltwater tank! Started many years ago with a 29 gallon, than a 80 gallon, now my 200 gallon! My husband has been great, however he can't help but notice the price of everything going up over the years lol..... but overall he has been really supportive. He loves the ocean too. 18 years ago when I called my dad to tell him he asked me to marry him, the first thing my dad asked was, "does he love the ocean as much as you do?" LOL! ;):D

Lady reefer here!! My dad had a saltwater tank for quite a few years when I was a teenager until after I moved out. I had never even seen one before his and I was instantly hooked. He taught me a little here and there but I learned most from R2R and the BRS videos. I have a 90g and 29g running for about 18 months now. The boyfriend likes to look at the tank, he helped me build the stand and he helps with the heavy lifting but that’s about it. My 3 year old daughter loves to feed the shish and new baby brother is mesmerized with all the colors. My tanks had been on the back burner while I was pregnant so I’ve got some work ahead of me to get it looking pretty again. Anyways, here’s some pics.

Hi Ladies,
I got into this crazy and expensive hobby about two years ago. I started with a Nano tank and then upgraded to a 75 g tank and I still consider myself a newbie because I'm still battling newbie stuff, like cyan. But I finally got my water chemistry stable after a year Anyway, I got into it because I am a gardener and miss gardening during winter. Well, this is gardening under water!! So here is my tank so far;

Hi Ladies!
Been salty for over 30 yrs. Started in FW but got bored so moved on to Cichlids at 3 mo's. Within a year, was in Salt with a custom 130g. LFS, Reef Central and the Web were my go to's for learning. At 67yrs, have an online business with regular customers which I love! Also love helping the newbie's as teaching was one of my careers, along with coaching...go Reefers'! Have helped a school develop a marine science class which at last count had a 5yr waiting list!! Seeing the progress made in the hobby has been a joy! Have been downsizing the last 2 yrs but it has been difficult to do; have to force myself. Lol. Hubby says that I cannot be buried in my 180g! We'll see! Lol

Metrokat and all you ladies, keep on keepin' on!!! Women reefers Rock!!!

A thread like this makes me happy and makes me sad.
Happy to see that there is some female reefers and sad that they need a specific community.
What are we male reefers doing wrong?
In a perfect world man and women would join the same forums and we would discuss our hobby not concerning if it is a man or women thats writing the questions and answers. And noone would be trashed for doing wrong - just helped.
