This one in the center of this picture is my favorite - his name is Ralph. He doesn't look like much, but he know the best snail jokes...:D

All joking aside, trochus are awesome. I love stomatella snails as well, as they clean all the nooks in live rock and propagate en masse as well.

Trochus- They are fast, right themselves, can fling hermits off, cause you to think your tank has crashed during spawn events. What more could you want in a snail.

2nd place goes to Astraea. They clean up plugs real well and do good work on the rocks.
3rd goes to turbos. Excellent grazers but they are bulldozers.

I like Turbos but dang they knock everything over and when they die it's a stinky event! LOL!

Cant believe everyone isn't saying cerith. They're the only ones I care about. The big beefy florida ones. They eat everything (leftover food, detritus, algae), cover the sand, rocks, and glass, and are pretty commonly available for a good price. They're always the bulk of my crew, I always order some of the other snails too but everything else is always a disappointment.

1. Trochus - big, fast, can right themselves, work hard
2. Tongan Nassarius (the big ones) - big, fast, clean up all the uneaten food on the sandbed. Stir the sandbed. I love how they all come out from the sand like a zombie hoard.
3. Cerith- better at cleaning the glass IMO then trochus. My trochus usually stick to the rock/powerheads/back wall.

Banded trochus and stomatellas.

They're the hardest working, least invasive and most interesting to look at snails I've come across.

Anyone else sensing a trend?

Red Banded Trochius, as stated above they right their self and I have them from babies to the old folks. They just had another spawning event.

Merited come in second. Gorgeous shells, they fit into tight spots. Only drawback is the white spots they leave which can be scraped off the glass
