Cyano problems

I have developed a cyano problem there is all red stringy stuff with air bubbles attatched to it hanging off my corals.ive decided to try the blackout method for a few days..will this harm my corals.i have a mix of soft,lps and sps corals

Can you post an image to be certain you're dealing with Cyano rather then Dinoflagellates.

Its not in the sand bed just hanging off corals.its coming back as fast as i am sucking it iff with a turkey baster.i do weekly water changes aswell.always have

It could be Dinoflagellates. Are you sure you have sufficient flow? Can you add more flow to see if that makes a differnce? Do you run a low pH, can you get your pH up around 8.2

Ph is normally around 8-8.3 got quite alot of flow running a jebao rw4 plus another 2 powerheads

Oh then.

Wait for others to chime in on the true ID, I am thinking Dino based on the description and image. Grows fast, bubbles on stings growing off the top of corals, sounds just like Dino to me based on my experience with it.

I stopped water changes
I did a 4 day total black out, with clams and sps no issues.
I stared the photoperiod back slowly, as soon as I saw bubbles start to form out went the lights.
Every single day I took a turkey baster or power head and blew all corals and rock clean, let it settle and cleaned mechanical filtration.
Kept my pH higher than 8.2
Raised my mag to around 1500

This is what worked for me after 3 months of dealing with the issue until I figured it was Dino. I also stopped introduction of all Amino Acid products.

Ok thanks..ive just done a big waterchange and sucked alot of it out in the process..just blacked out the tank now and turned off light..so u reckon 4 days will b ok to leave it like that?

After 3 or 4 days when i uncover the tank again and switch lights on is it best to just start with blues for a day or so then gradually up the whites over a few days?

1 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide from the drug store per each 10 gallons of water in your system dosed each day for a week, or until it is all gone will likely be a big help to you in this situaution, along with siphoning out whatever you are able to siphon out. I have used this method with success in my mixed reef with mostly acropora, but it had not gotten nearly as bad as you show in your picture. I began treatment when I saw a couple of long strands attached to the tips of a couple of colonies. Increase water flow as well!

This is not cyano bacteria! It is dinoflagellates.

I keep thinking it's partly a low flow issue as with appropriate flow air bubbles shouldn't stay like this.

There is quite alot of flow in the tank..i will try re positioning them

Agree with DFW. I had an extreme case and Chemiclean barely put a dent in it. It was working so slow that the die-off was fueling more growth. I dosed peroxide a little heavier than recommended, about a cap full to 10g, and it was all dead the next day. What was left of the coral was fine and my crustaceans were fine. I didn't have any fish and the time so I don't know how they would react. Peroxide works. Make sure you vacuum out all the dead stuff though.

I have a 15 Gallon tank growing cyno over night. I could grab clumps out daily. Tried Chemi clean did not dent it. Did the water changes, It was killing the coral. Tried Red Slime remover. One dose is for 15 Gallons. Did two doses. It is now gone for three months. Skimmer went crazy. But you do not have to do water changes. No sign of cyno anymore.

This is not cyanobacteria, so neither of those products will work! And if the chemiclean is not fresh, it will not work on cyano either!

Uncovered tank yesterday afternoon after 3 days of darkness and cyano has gone :) lights been on today and it hasnt come back ☺
