Fish stuff.
A bit about me!
I've been reading the forum for a while and finally decided to start posting :)
After some issues with logging in (thanks for the help rev) I can finally start!
I'm a colour blind artist.
A virtually tone deaf musician.
A broke fish guy!
But somehow I make it all work :)
I used to work in an aquarium for about a year or so. This was before I was fully into the hobby and I'm kicking myself now for not realising the beauty that surrounded me everyday. I had the 5 gal you'll read about soon back then, but I wasn't a fish nut at that time so it was really just for something to look at, not a major hobby that borderlines passion of mine that it is now. Anyway, onto the tanks....
24 x 14 x 16 tall.
There's nothing special about this one so I won't go too far into detail. It's essentially a fowlr with a skimmer on the back, a couple of flow pumps and a single T8 (yep, that's right, T8!) 10,000k light on it.
I have about 10kg of base rock in there and a 1/4" sandbed I'm going to remove.
As for livestock I have a valentini puffer and a snowflake eel.
As for CUC I have mostly turbo snails (Turbo undulatus) these aren't the regular ones you'll find at your LFS, they're locally caught ones from the lake I live near. They take care of all algae I have ever had. Green stuff, red stuff, brown stuff, slimy stuff, hairy stuff, you name it. Definitely the best CUC member I've ever had.
I also have some black nerites
(Nerita melanotragus) but my puffer likes to eat them, so get don't last long and the ones that do live, like to take a walk outside my tank.
I also have quite a few red handed shrimp (Palaemon serenus) who are awesome little scavengers!
Like I said, nothing too special, but it's a work in progress :)
14 x 8.5 x 10.25 tall.
Some history!
Set up about 2 and a half years ago. Give or take a couple of months as a very tight budget tank. Nothing cost me more than $30 on this build (hardware and livestock).
I put a small refugium on the side to hide all my hardware. It doesn't look great, but it keeps ugly pumps and heaters out of the display :)
I do weekly 2 1/2L water changes with Red Sea coral pro.
I know it doesn't look too good at the moment, but I'm saving up for some decent lights at a decent price. Its a hard hobby when your broke haha.
I'm thinking about starting all over again and putting in a cool water baby angler fish. There pretty awesome! But then again, I want to keep it a reef. I'm torn!
Parameters!
- Salinity - 1.025.
- alk - 8.
- cal - 400.
- mag - can't test right now, last test read 1300.
- ammonia - 0.
- nitrite - 0.
- Nitrate - approx 5ppm.
- Phosphate - undetectable.
Bio filter!
- 5kg live rock.
- 0.5 inch coral sand bed.
- 0.5kg rubble rock, probably a bit less.
Hardware!
Return/flow.
- 500l/hr aquaone.
Temp control.
- 25w aquaone heater.
Lighting.
- aquaone AR-126 fixture (very old!)
- 9w 50/50 actinic/daylight power compacts. Yes it does the trick!
Live stock!
Fish.
- sand goby 1 1/2". I don't know the scientific name, I found him in a local rock pool when he was about 1/2" long.
Coral.
- None of the coral in this tank cost more that $10.
- 1 red cynarina - about 5".
- 2 green cynarina. One is about 1" The other is about 3".
- 1 red and green candy cane with 2 heads. The larger head is splitting twice at the same time, so it's 2 heads now, but will be 4 soon :)
- 1 neon green candy cane with 5 heads.
- A few Rhodactus mushies, 2 purply, bluey, reddy coloured ones. 2 deep green with purple bubbles.
CUC.
- the black nerites I mentioned earlier and that's it!
I'm a bit over the main 2 colours being red and green. I'm actually over having "main colours" and not an awesome rainbow.
I really want some orange and blue in there, maybe some yellow too.
I'm thinking another goby, but because my current goby isn't in the aquarium trade and he's mostly been on his own, I don't know it's tendency to become aggressive.
Pictures (The good stuff!) to come! :)
Sorry for the huge post :P
