Are you properly calibrating your refractometer?
Lot of people just use RO/DI water which will read 0..however your not going to get the the most accurate results.
the next batch of people will use proper 35ppt/1.026 calibration solution which gets you closer.. but ar you taking into account...
I have been getting asked a lot of question form new reefers on what all is involved in maintaining a saltwater reef tank. Yesterday i decided to film my "weekly" routine of maintenance to give a good overview of what all is involved in maintaining a reef tank.
Below are my general weekly...
Hello all
This was posted an another forum recently and I think it's a really interesting article and potentially raises several points worth considering to the very basic husbandry of our reef tanks.

Have we been getting the most basic...
I got my refractometer from BRS the other day and noticed that it's blue line doesn't seem straight across. For example, I have it perfectly set at 35 ppm on the right side, but my salinity on the left reads like 1.027 or 26. It seems to me like the reading (if set at 35 ppm) should be straight...
Hello , I've had my aquamaxx skimmer off for a couple weeks now , and I've finally added livestock back to my DT after a 88 day fallow period . When adding my hob skimmer back on the tank , it states to add tank water into the skimmer and begin running . When I first added the skimmer 6 months...
Hi,
I had a floating saltwater gadge witch is inaccurate and has claimed the lives of two clownfish and a shrimp because it gave an inaccurate reading and caused a salinity spike during a water change. I am looking to buy a more accurate, quality refractometer but need help picking one. I am...
So my current LFS is being a bit unreliable with my salinity and i've been interested in mixing my own salt for a while now. i currently have a 20g nano reef with a 10g sump, but i'm going to be upgrading soon to a 120ish gallon reef. I'd like to know what a good RODI unit is that won't break...
I just noticed My salinity is around 1.018 and i don't own a RODI unit yet so I have no way of raising it since it's Christmas Eve and I have no idea if any stores will be open tomorrow, I have about 3 gallons of RO water in a jug so I might be able to mix salt water should I get my hands on...
Hi all, I was wondering what you thought about the inexpensive (usually "ATO" branded) salinity refractometers as far as accuracy, do they last very long, etc.
I have a feeling at $19 shipped with a case, they're pretty popular!
Thanks!

Aquarium Salinity: How to Measure and Why It's Important
Salinity is one of the most important parameters measured in reef aquaria. It controls not only the salt balance between an organism and its surrounding environment, but also the levels of a host of ions in seawater that aquarists neither measure nor control independently. Consequently...
