So I just finished my first water change, but I'm about 1.5-2 gallons short of new fresh saltwater. My current salt is reading 1.027 with a refractometer.
Can I just add 1.5-2 gallon of RO/DI fresh water to make up the difference or should I mix 2 gallons which is what I'm in the middle of now...

Remember sugar cubes at coffee and tea time? Why not have the same for salt at mix time?
I used to enjoy easily knowing how much sugar I added from a common item at any table, anywhere and it was easy to do, tastes satisfied immediately. As I was putting my auto water change, fill and flush...

Im getting ready to convert my system to an AWC-only setup, eliminating dosing altogether and allowing the salt mix to replenish cal/alk/mag/etc. Its a mostly LPS system with lower demands and I want to automate and simplify its maintenance as much as possible. Its a 68g system that I will prob...
Hi All! I have a question regarding salt… I use coralife and every time I did a water change my alk went to 9.1 and I really want to keep it at 8… didn’t notice this until start testing after water change.. do I need to just keep it like this jumping 1dkh every time water change or I should...
I decided to switch to Seachem products, but ran into problems.
First, I am confused by the level of sulfur in fresh water. I used Vibrant salt and sent fresh salted water to ICP-test. The level of SO4 was almost 2 times higher than the norm: 5400 at a norm of 2500.
Secondly, freshly salted...
So I just got a new pack of Tropic Marin classic salt. Its dKH is supposed to be 9-10 dKH, but when I mix it up it comes out to be 14 dKH!!!?!. I mixed and tossed that bag around when I first got it.
Ive made two batches with the same results. I measured and used the correct salt portions: ½...
Morning everyone. For years I have used instant oceans regular reef salt. Is there a benefit to using Reed crystals instead? Will it hurt anything if I change to them? I can afford some of the more expensive salt brand or id swap to Red Sea:
I'm new to the hobby and have been looking for salt mixes. I was looking at Tropic Marin's website and in their salt ingredients they put Mercury as one of the trace elements. I'm a bit confused. Is there a use for mercury by aquarium inhabitants?
Also is this alright or would the mercury...
Howdy all, I am on my 7th month of Reefing and everything is going okay, I've made a couple mistakes here and there and learned a lot and still have so much more to learn and equipment to buy but this hobby has saved my life during a mandated by law curfew lockdown that we are policed to live...
I have 2 Full Unopened Containers of Red Sea 175 Gallon Salt Mix and on that is sealed and 3/4 full. I am out of the hobby so I have no use for it now, I used about 5 containers of the same salt when I was in the hobby and it was great. I am asking for $125 local pickup only (Massapequa, Long...
I'm just curious about sea salt. I'd like to know more in depth of why it's not good to use sea salt that has moisture in it to use it in a fish tank. I'm a little confused because it gets wet/ dissolved into our aquariums and I'm pretty sure alot of salt on the market comes right out of a wet...
I usually sit a 25W heater, an air pump with air-stone and a 1000Lph pump in a 5 gallon bucket, I put in around 700g of salt with 18Liters + or - and usually come back around the same time the next day to do a water change. Would there be anything wrong with using an external heater to heat the...
Hey all,
Ive been slowly piecing together my tank, and I’ve spent the past few weeks deciding on what salt to use. I’m currently hung up between Red Sea Salt, or their Coral Pro salt. I live in Australia so some other salts are unavailable, but for my tank needs the coral pro seems best
I’ll...
A couple of bigger salt manufacturers (instant ocean Marineland) have made releases stating that the cost of salt will be going up by almost 1/3 of current price.
Apparently Many LFS are fighting back. And the rumour is this is all thanks to “covid inflation”. Example, bucket of instant ocean...
Dear reefers,
I would like to kindly ask you if you have any experiences with Microbe Lift Premium Reef salt. I have started my 30 G mixed reef tank with it few months ago and except for quite low alk (7.4) and high Mg > 1500 ppm (Salifert), Im relatively satisfied with the product. However, in...
I started my macro tank in January and I've been using IO salt as I have dine in the past with my first tank almost a decade ago. However, the last two batches have produced brown residue and small white particulates that won't dissolve and I'm not too happy with it. I tried a couple different...
Okay so Hanna's Digital Salinity Meter requires calibration right? Could Hanna produce a Checker that did not require the purchase of calibration solutions?
For example if a Salt Mix Pack says "Mix 1g of salt to 1 liter of water for 35ppt" Bearing in mind Hanna Calibration solution is 35ppt, you...
