What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Where are you from Camden? Please don't say your mom. I can't slap you through my phone.
lol. It's all good, Virginia. Roanoke small town.

Same here. There another DIY video about drilling a tank that has water in it. He drills the hole freehand because he's drilling from the side. I never understood why you couldn't clamp a plywood guide on one side and a solid piece of plywood behind to do a horizontal drill. Just go eady on the pressure. Or if you use a drill guide like we did you could clamp that to one side of the glass, or screw it to the plywood guide and clamp that to the glass. Clamp gently though. If you used a drill through overflow you wouldn't be using a 2" drill like I did and it would easily clear the drill guide. I had to use the drill itself to drill out the guide before I could drill the glass.
Ive seen that video. He's a pretty popular DIY reefer. I can't think of his name to save my blackened soul of course

I just feel like a sump will help me manage the tank better in general. Reactors, rollers, fuges the whole nine. I am gonna be patient with this. Im just making plans for when I do switch because I really do want too. I have done the rock scrub method a multitude of times. It fixes It but not for enough time for me to get rid of my nitrates.
Camden,

A sump can be nice to have as it can help hide equipment and give you more room for equipment but equipment is never the answer for basic tank problems. A saltwater tank can run quite well with nothing more than an old-fashioned under-gravel filter, a power head for flow, some rock, and light (and a heater depending on the temperature of the room used for the tank). The penchant for equipment is understandable, we all fall into it but the answer is never a piece of equipment, it is always observation, manual intervention and basic husbandry.

Where the equipment comes into play is to allow you to overload a tank with livestock or to make certain tasks easier. Reefing is an expensive hobby but don't let glistening new equipment overshadow the basic hobby. Places like BRS are in the hobby to make money off of you. They will gladly help you spend all of your hard earned money on equipment you don't need. I kept reef tanks for over thirty years before I had my first AIO or sump tank. I used HOB, canister and in-tank. Those were, in retrospect, some of my favorite tanks because they were simple and basic. None of them had protein skimmers or fleece rollers or reactors or controllers or any of the 'fancy stuff' that has nothing to do with how a saltwater aquarium survives.

It can be daunting and depressing to clean rocks yet again but removing the algae is the only way to get the nutrients out of the tank. When you kill the algae most of the nutrients that were in the algae are released back into the water column. A self-defeating methodology. When you pull a rock to clean it, go over it with straight hydrogen peroxide (the standard 3% solution from a drug store) on a toothbrush. That will kill a lot of the remaining algae on the rock and reduce the possibility of its return for a few weeks. Check how much you feed and what you feed to see why your nutrients are so high, but mainly manually pull algae. It will remove the nutrients from the tank. Yes a protein skimmer will help but it can only remove the dissolved organics that are in the water column. Once an organic protein is absorbed, the protein skimmer has no effect on it.

-- edit - had to change a word that R2R's filters didn't like because of an alternate meaning too bad the filters don't understand context --
I'll do another rock clean this weekend. Fluanzacole is killing everything anyway so it'll be weak when I go to scrub.

Again not insisting what anyone should do. It just interests me.

Use pure peroxide. It won't harm the bacteria because its in the cracks and crevices

I drilled my friends tank that we just dropped the water level to maybe an inch under the hole. Mind you, I sweated through three Tshirts and needed to change my undies after. ..but it worked.

I'll try to do this, parents dislike ordering things I guess cause it's a pain. I'm almost out of money in my Venmo from summer work and I can't put cash into my phone unless I go to a bank lol.

That's not too terribly far from me about 4.5 hours. You know another option could be to save up your money look for used tanks that are already drilled on Facebook market place then you could possibly use your current tank as the sump.

So....the reefbreeder 14k Edge bars came in to mount on the outside of my halide fixture!!
I can't wait to see what you think of them. While I don't think I need them, I am considering adding the 14k bars to give me a more daylight look to the tank down the road sometime. Did you buy them during their Labor Day sale? I seriously considered buying them but then I figured I might get hungry later so buying food might take precedence. Not sure that was a good judgement call.

My friend, if I were closer. I would help you get that tank rocking!
Trust me I could use the help. My LFS is too busy to help me+the prices for help from him are outrageous. 500$ for some visits. The only other reefer around here isn't active on R2R (Roanokereefing) and my classmate who I got into this hobby @~Torp~ is new to this.

You might get lucky like I have so far with the fluanzacole treatment. It killed all my gha, I added phosoguard to my sump and so far the gha hasn't come back.

Sweet. I don't know how but film algae is dying too. It doesn't use the same synthesis in its cell for it's membrane so I find it odd.

Might just be the tank aging and parameters settling.
