What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
OOOOH, right off the bat I can see that popcorn is needed for that thread. I know Miami recently did a 100% wc with natural seawater and I can say that if I had a source of fresh from the ocean water I would change 50% a week, just to get all of the 'stuff' in the water. I still remember the first saltwater book I read had a photo of a tank, more like a bowl, of one of the first reefers, I think his name was Eng. Anyway I found it less than inspiring since he lived in Indonesian and just replace his water on a regular basis.
I have two LFS that provide that water, but hearing the stories about toxic elements that can come if the collection is not good scared me, and besides, it is more convenient for me to mix my own water here at home since it saves a lot of time.

I live right next to the ocean. I am still reluctant to do it. I'm afraid mostly of algae. But thinking when I buy my ocean front house, I may drop a garden hose in and just suck it right in and out. Thinking that would be a predator tank. like maybe shark and not heat the water. I've come across a few home that have actually been on a dock. imagine just dropping a hose straight below?
And I worry about boat emissions and the like, this close to the shore.

Ive been thinking about this. Id love to hear some input on the pros and cons. The Gulf is like 5 minutes from my house. Very interesting.
You need to collect it at a specific number of feet deep and in a remote place where not many ships pass by because it can become contaminated, is what I've heard.

Yeah that's what im thinking. Id have to spend way too much in order to get out to clean water. Although I will say that this will definitely work on a large scale. When we had our fishing camp, we sold thousands upon thousands of live shrimp and minnows. We had an open loop system that ran 24/7. No filtration, just a continuous water change. But you were subject to some natural occurrences, but it was the most effective way to do it.

Sad news. jawfish is coming to his end. I’ve had him for about 2.5 years and I heard they only live a few. He was ~3” when I got him and he is 5” now. So must be pretty old. Not sure if I should wait or euthanize. He’s still swimming but struggling. Keeps rolling around.
Finish him or let him be?

Most of the places I have heard of that use NSW get it off shore. The thinking, I believe, is that they are gathering it from beyond the run off areas. What I like about the idea is that you don't just get NSW elements but also phytoplankton, copepods, zooplankton, sort of an analogy to live rock versus dry rock.

The largest coral farm in Australia, don't remember its name, runs an open loop system and I believe at least one of the Florida growers do as well.

Hard call Paul, I would say if you have nassarius snails, hermit crabs or bumblebee snails they will start on him before he is completely dead so I would help him go peacefully.

Sorry, I loved that fish!

That makes perfect sense to me, Tom.

Difficult decision but in my opinion it is to do it quickly to avoid suffering for both parties. So sorry Paul

He didn’t fight when I picked him up. Spit out a chunk of water. Getting deep freezer to go quietly.

That’s how I did it with my royal gramma. If you remember it stomach swelled huge. Fish medics said it was either kidney or liver failure and nothing to be done. As it was on the sand, gills still moving, I took it out and placed it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. I’ve been meaning to get, I believe it is the one, clove oil to have on hand incase I ever have to do it again.

Well, it was supposed to be lake day today, my wife has been out there helping prepare the food, 80 degrees and sunny, but my uncle’s ex wife, mother of his son passed away this morning in hospice. She was such a nice person and was invited to all the family events. They are taking the food to her son’s.
So sorry for your families loss.

This might be better before the freeze. You’re half way there!
