Walker, I have missed you buddy. It sounds like you've been more than busy. I was going back through my old r2r content and found my first post. The first response was from you, then the rest of the Smorgasbord chimed in too!
I remember how encouraged I felt after reading this. I immediately went out and bought mushrooms and the zoas I still have to this day.

It's truly crazy how far you have come in this hobby. I mean I seriously think your tank is one of the best on Reef2Reef. Hows your tank doing right now?

Do you guys think I can still make saltwater outside? That's where my dad says I have to do it.. in a mulch pit.. I don't know how I'm gonna run a power head or heater for the water.

I make mine outside connected to a garden hose.

Ah.. I was thinking of doing 30-50% to hit the ground running. Problably 30% just to make it more manageable and less time consuming. Can I keep saltwater in the trashcan for more then a week? And every two days throughout that week use the water? The plan is to basically make trash can capacity and do 30% every two days.

You can keep it for a week easily, just check the salinity level before use and top off with fresh RO as needed to bring it back to proper SG after evaporation. Keep it stirring also.

To your heater question: I don't use a heater but my water is usually warm, not cool. I have the opposite problem and need to cool it prior to water changes.

It's what I've been recommended and I personally think it'd be better for the ecosystem. Smaller changes will cause me to be less consistent.

Larger changes make for more fluctuations, less consistent. Smaller changes keep things more stable. More gradual increase/decrease.

Omi don't have many corals.. so it won't be a big affect.

Fish are also affected by rapid increase/decrease and fluctuations. Rapid nitrate drops and rises can harm a.fish as easily as high nitrates. I don't recommend anything over 20%.

For the record, I've had flashing nitrates on my Hanna with no issues.

All other recommendations aside, in a reef tank slow changes are always preferable to large changes except in an emergency. Nitrates at 160 are not an emergency. I personally would not do more than 20% changes unless I had a lot of stuff actively dying. Also you do not need to heat the water while mixing, in fact most salt mixes say not to heat it while mixing. If the water you want to add is more than a few degrees different from your tank temp, and you are doing more than around 5% water change, then it is advisable to heat the replacement water before using it. I usually set the bucket next to the tank, throw a heater in it and then walk away for an hour or so to let the water get to tank temp.

I know I have been pretty absent, but Bailey has been keeping me informed of all your kind words and prayers! Thank you so much... It has meant the world to our family! Little dude is doing incredible, and we are so blessed to call him ours.

Most common are black and gray squirrels. But the black squirrel genes are dominant and there are less and less grey squirrels. The black squirrels were released many decades ago on the Kent State University campus by a professor. I’ll post some pictures of the more rare and strange squirrels that show up at my bird feeders.
