What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Ah.. I was thinking of doing 30-50% to hit the ground running. Problably 30% just to make it more manageable and less time consuming. Can I keep saltwater in the trashcan for more then a week? And every two days throughout that week use the water? The plan is to basically make trash can capacity and do 30% every two days.
I mix about 200 gallons at a time and use it over 2-5 weeks.

Do you guys think I can still make saltwater outside? That's where my dad says I have to do it.. in a mulch pit.. I don't know how I'm gonna run a power head or heater for the water.
Better listen to dad. always, even if it sucks sometimes. I butted heads with mine quite a bit, but in hindsight, there was usually a reason he said what he did.
Have you asked him if you could mix it in a tub or maybe mix it in the shower basin? Then if anything spills it would go down the drain and not make a mess, and you wont have to mess with heaters outside.

I do 12.5% weekly changes and I never stored it but I believe you can store it in a sealed container up to two weeks before alk begins to drop and minerals start to precipitate.
I have stored it for 2+ months before, the alk precipitation is pretty minimal. Even less if you keep a powerhead in it. I do have a lid, not sealed, but it does catch most of the evaporate so salinity stays stabile.

Hes afraid the bin will overflow and flood the basement.. which isn't a bad fear, however theres a sump pump down there. So all I have to do is put the waste line into the drain unit and I'm good. I haven't however spoken on a shower basin.. can an RO unit connect to one?

I dont blame him, that is definitely a risk.

You would have to hook the ro up to the sink and stretch a tube into the shower, but then youd have overflow protection. It would just go down the shower drain if it overflowed.

Same if you were to do it in the basement in a catch basin (like a water heater pan) with the drain going to the sump pump basin.
You could snag one cheap, and a stick of 3/4 pvc. The pan comes with a fitting to inset the pvc pipe into, then just pipe it over to the sump pump area.

Just giving some ideas, but at the end of the day, it is your dads house so he would have to be ok with it.

that is neat! i have a couple chunks my dad kept from when he was a crab fisherman in the bering sea, dredged up with either the anchor or the crab pot back in the 80s. ill have to see if i can find them, they are pretty small too
Would love to see that

Here's the free heater I was given with the skimmer.. it's broken too? You can see two springs on the end there. Is that normal? Do you guys think I can fix it with a 3D printed or glued plastic piece over it? Ignore my hand I have vitilaigo so it looks weird.

That looks like a glass tube heater. I would not trust a used one even if it wasn't broken. Cut the cord off of it and throw it away. Do not take a chance with it. Broken heaters are the most dangerous piece of gear in an aquarium. There are many that advocate throwing away all of your heaters yearly and replacing them. I find that advice a little drastic but check your heaters often. If they look damaged, at all, in any way, throw them away and buy new ones.

If only there were other ways to heat an aquarium..

The desert has a pretty decent way of heating tanks...
I know of a fish store where they just keep the whole store at the temperature they want the tanks.

A lot of breeders keep fish rooms at 80° and 75% humidity for that reason. Less evaporation and constant temperatures. They'll fill 55 gallon drums with water and heat those, shut the air vents for the AC, and circulate the drums to keep the humidity up.

Makes sense
