Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Very cool! Yes, it does look like a Cooper's hawk. We get them down here, along with Red-Tail hawks and any number of other birds of prey, including Eagles. I have a picture of an Eagle sitting on a house across the water from me. It's very cool when the buzzards or vultures are eating something and an Eagle shows up. All the other birds scatter and take off.

Ok, you've piqued my interest in this "shop" you speak of. I need more info on it.

Of the Rocky Mountain variety? 🤣
its in my build thread, little rough, but I do a lot of woodwork down there

Hey guys does any one know what this is ? It just moved my flower anemone which was hiding this . This is the black sponge I was talking about which now I’m not sure .

Looks like a sponge with a bunch of spirobid or spionid worms growing underneath.

I thought it was a black sponge but now I’m not sure . I cleared the take of all that I could find and did a week of peroxide and it is still growing on the sides of my glass . And today the flower anemone moved from a location he’s been for over 4 years , to find it growing where he was just sitting . Do you have any suggestions as to what I Could use to get rid of it ?

That was going to be my guess as well!

I don't. Unfortunately my experience with most sponges has been good. I had one sponge that was toxic and killed corals - I removed the rocks it was on, exposed them to air, rinsed really good, and repeated until they were gone.

The good news is, it's less likely to be toxic if your RFA was hanging out unbothered by it.

I did have a abundant of bumble bee snails for the worms they obviously couldn’t get to them because of the flower anemone was there .

In the past I’ve lost a couple of coral to this . You think it could become toxic ?

Both sponges and spirobid/spionid worms point to an excess or nutrients and potentially high TSS (total suspended solids). The fact that you have filter feeders is a good sign (usually) of a healthy tank that is self sustaining. Besides being an eyesore, in my opinion, if they're not bothering anything, the sponges stay. Spionid/spirorbid can go. Bumblebees are great.

I have this everywhere in my tank.
I'm considering it purple, not black, but my tank is mostly white for lightning.
I've never thought anything of it, good or bad but considered almost all sponge to be beneficial.

Keep in mind, color isn't indicative of anything when it comes to sponges really. You could have 3 different black sponges in your tank, all 3 completely unrelated. 1, 2, or all 3 could be completely harmless or toxic. Some are toxic only to close by corals, some to the whole tank, and some even to humans.

Well said Tim and I +1 all the way.

I've also had a lot of this sponge impervious to eradication no matter how hard I tried.

But there are killing my corals , I’ve been taking rocks out or moving coral to keep them from sure death . It’s been going on for about a year . The first time it killed my Garth bonsai which was about a foot and a half tall . I keep removing it only for it to come back . I really don’t want to tear down this tank .
