Any suggestions? Really want a show stopper - something cool that would be by itself in the water column. Open to anything but if it’s invertebrate safe (hermit crabs and other types of crabs) that would be even better, I’m not worried about corals though.

One solitary fish is going to get lonely , and most likely get stressed pretty easy

Why not do a small predator tank? Most predatory fish will be fine by themself.

Yeah I’m open to anything if you have suggestions, I honestly don’t have my heart set on one thing or another at the moment.

40 gallons is a bit too small for a dwarf lionfish, I wouldn’t put one in anything under 55 but some people do. There are some anglers/frogfish, waspfish, and smaller scorpionfish that could work in a 40.

This is the holy grail of predator fish that's happy to be alone and a 40g would be a good tank for him, you are best to feed him live mollies even if he takes dead food. He won't eat hard bodied inverts but shrimp are on the menu. Rhinopias scorpionfish, painted angler, wartskin angler. I prefer the painted anglers to the wartys, they are more aggressive and active, as well as about twice the size. The anglers won't eat hard bodied inverts either. Dwarf lionfish eventually "may" enjoy a larger tank, but most importantly they are more social and would enjoy tank mates.

I definitely think the answer here is a small lion or angler
