Oh. What kinds of fish are the most endearing in a reef?

endearing is very subjective. Do you mean what fish have the most personality?

if so, clowns, blennies, Toby puffers (I recommend valentini for you. I had one and want another), gobies, hawkfish

All of which would thrive in a 40b

Im going to try building my tank like how I feel serpadesign would build a tank. I’d do it functional and I’d use lots of expanding foam

If that’s what you want to do, go for it. Just keep the diminished swim space and water volume in mind

I want a engineer goby so I gotta put the rocks before the sand

engineers will outgrow a 40b. But here’s something I learned recently. 53g has the same footprint but is taller. Consider that for your future build. I just picked one up from The Reef (I live 20 min north from you) for about 10$ more than a 40. Don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner.

Sorry for forgetting. But yeah. Get a 53g

@NoahLikesFish
Your display is where you keep fish
Size of sump aka your filter does not mean more swim space for you tank period.

I have two mandarin dragonets they swim at the bottom.
I have three clowns they host my overflow (clowns are weirdos.)
I have tang he likes his caves but shares them with a cherub angelfish.

I cannot no matter how big I make my sump add 5 more tangs to my tank. There isn’t enough space in the tank. They all need room to stretch their swim legs.

currently I am under stocked. But I feed a lot. My fish are fat and happy. I also feed my corals. My sump only allows me to feed more and keep everyone in healthy condition.

you can’t have 20 fish in a 20. Or any other outrageous number. No mater how clean or how dirty said fish are.

salt water and freshwater are two different animals. Trust me I’ve done both.

It isn’t including rims on my tank. It’s 36 x18 and 18 inches with no rims included

yeah the actual volume of a tank with those dimensions is 40g. Go 36x18x21 (it’s a noticeable difference in person) you got 53g
