400 gallon first reef build super newb

Well my hippo tank died it was only about a week ago I got it from Ocean devotion very very small literally like 2 inches long and I'm hoping to replace it waiting for them to contact me but besides that nitrates are at like 18 and everything is looking pretty dang good

Well I learned a hard lesson and it's to have a quarantine tank cause some Fish brought in a disease that wiped out about 10 fish at the least

I use a 15-gallon Innovative Marine AIO with cycled sponges (with extra bottled bacteria) to keep ammonia at bay, while quarantining. Sorry your fish took such a disease hit. 😞

With a system this big, especially with so many tangs, a quarantine is a must. Doesn’t have to be anything crazy though

My advice to anybody who wants to do a reef tank his first lol don't ha ha and then if you do you must have a quarantine tank

I purchased a 40 gallon breeder half price for 75 bucks at Petco and they got a 20 gallon long to make a stump that's gonna be a perfect not perfect but a complete system and thats how it's gonna go from now on I lost the gem that was 900

I suspect his fish have brook. We did 2 doses of Metro 24 hours apart. Now 2 days of nothing after %25ish WC and carbon in sump. CP is coming today so we will start that tonight. Only problem is this in his his main tank as I don't think we can get the fish out without destroying his aquascape. Although we may have to.

A never-fail to catch fish technique is the "low tide method." Just drain that tank into a clean Brute can, second tank, etc., until all the fish are swimming in about 3" of water and there is no where really for them to hide. Net them out and put your water back in. 😉

We are gonna start CP in the main tank while he gets a hospital tank up and going. That low tide idea is great. Thank you. We were just talking and thinking that once the big tank is emptI of life we could run it with bleach 🤔

Luckily I have a lifetime friend who has learned a lot and helping me out I would be so lost I would not even have done this so I don't know maybe is his fault I did this🤪

Your Tank still looks very young. I would slow down as some of your fish are Algae eaters (Lawnmower) and will starve in a bare Tank. The Tangs also need Algae. Nori is fine however they like to graze the rockwork as well. I always QT all fish and with the numbers you are adding the odds of one or more of them bringing in a pathogen are very high. With your Tank size and depth it becomes a major headache to catch them not to mention treating them. You will probably need more QT space. I have 2 40's for my smaller DT Tank. Qt is a lot of work but worth it. My DT has been setup for over a year with no loses to Disease. (Knock Wood) Qt though, plenty of sick fish and loses.

Thanks for looking I've been feeding a bunch of herbivore frenzy and seaweed and everybody's been eating for a few weeks been good but then my dummy went and bought blue green chromus
And I knew I was rolling the dice and sure enough I saw red streaks on one so now I am dosing medication and buying a quarantine tank set up for the future which to me is one of the biggest things now I know needed because if not you're in for a lot of headache and heartache
