Was wondering what peoples thoughts are for my stocking list. Been freshwater keeping for a few years but new to reefing. This is just a work in progress/theory crafting I know it's a lot more than that but just seeing what others think. I'm saving up to start but I would appreciate any suggestions for stocking or any equipment recommendations for lighting! Thank you

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

My only points for you at the moment at the moment are 1 - Halloween Hermits tend to get larger than the other hermits in the hobby, so you may want to cut back on them (I probably wouldn't do more than two), and 2 - I'm not sure how the hawkfish would do with the various shrimp and crabs (hawkfish generally are known to be invert-eaters); hopefully someone will be able to say for sure if that's a safe combo or not though.

Also, as a side note, remember the inverts need food too - if the fish are fed enough to feed the inverts as well, that's great; if not, the inverts (particularly the bigger ones and - while there's not much algae in the tank - the herbivorous ones) may need some extra food to help them thrive as well.

Anyway, sounds like a good stock list so far - glad to see you're doing good research!

Hawkfish will eat shrimp, possibly crabs and this is a lot of specimens for a 50 g tank even a 4 foot yank at 55 gallons.

I would personally skip the chromis or just do one. They can often carry uronema and sometimes pick on each other once settled in. Keeping one fixes the bickering issue though.

Mandarin fish is a maybe, it will totally depend how your tank develops and what it can support which we can’t know yet.

Hawkfish wont mix well with the small inverts. Expensive lunch.

Thank you! I'll change the Halloween to a couple more red and blue legged just in case!

Would a green clown goby work in place of the hawkfish? I'm trying thinking of something that would be more of a perching fish.

Would taking out one or both chromis for a chalk bass work better instead?

I would take out the chromis, they will pick each other off and you will end up with one.

A clown goby should be fine - they're reported pretty peaceful with just about any fish/invert from what I've heard.

Chalk bass are really cool looking. You can actually keep multiple chalk bass together.

Blennies are my favorite perching fish. Eat algae and big personalities!
