This is my 75 Gallon Build

I started this project several months ago, and have been taking my time to acquire the components and things I wanted, rather than jumping the gun and regretting it. As a pilot, I am out of town for 2-3 days at a time, so automation was a huge focus during this project. 25 years ago I had a 120 Gallon reef tank and was in my 20's and had friends over who at some point through out the evenings festivities decided that the fish needed to have a frosty beverage as well. :face-with-rolling-eyes: I woke up the following day to everything in the tank dead. I swore at that point I would not have a saltwater tank again till i could protect it and build it in. So here we are 25 years later, and everything about the saltwater reefing I once knew has become far advanced !

To begin this project, I had to remove the water heater living under my stairs. Initially i anticipated just relocating the existing water heater to the garage. Once I started planning things out, I realized that the water heater was original to the house and was atleast 20 years old. I decided to replace the water heater with a new one, however this cut into my tank build funds :) With the water heater removed, I installed some new laminate waterproof flooring as well as FRP on the walls to prevent mold. A wifi controlled ventilation fan was installed to monitor temperature and humidity in the room.

The room was exactly 36" wide which fit a 40 Gallon Breeder (tight fit) for my sump.

In the process of pricing out stuff on BRS for this build out, I found an ad on Facebook for someone selling a RedSea tank with all the automation, accessories, pumps, skimmer, MP40s and full Apex system. I was able to pick up the entire package hauled it home and posted the tank back online and sold the tank alone for what I paid for everything. So now that all the major items were acquired, it was time to get the stand and entertainment center built. Water filtration was mounted in room with a dedicated icemaker water valve to supply water. A waste line added to rear wall for RO waste as well as ability to add Auto water change unit.

Tank is on day 7 of a fishless cycle and I am ready to start adding some life to this display.

Fireplace under the tv? Naw, a reef tank! I love it! that is such a cool and unique idea!
Is maintenance difficult in a small space like that?

I guess I should have included a few more pictures and info. I designed the entertainment side with magnetic panels. The top and front pop off for full access to the tank. Lights are on a sliding channel to slide back out of the way. When I get back home, I will add a few more pictures !

The panels each have magnets on them to align and hold in place. The 48” AI blades are mounted on some aluminum stock channel and slide back out of the way as well.
Although I am going to redo the lights because I just got an additional 48” Grow so I have the 2-1 ration Grow/ Glow per recommendations. And I want to add a center support so they don’t bend or flex in the center.

Definitely a working progress but hoping to add some life to it this weekend !

I'd be intrigued to see how you provide support in the middle of these lights. I'm interested in them, but the bowing is a concern of mine. I don't think it'd cause any damage to internal components, but I believe there's a seal around the glass/plastic for the LEDS - bowing could potentially compromise that seal and lead to a reduced lifespan.

Are you noticing any humidity issues running in an enclosed environment? Or temperature issues from the blades? Any sort of air exchange occurring?

I installed on the backside an exhaust fan that controls the humidity and temperature in the room. I have it set at different variable speeds for different percentages and it does a great job. No issues so far. Currently 71° and 48% humidity. Mold and mildew moisture buildup typically starts around 60% . So far no signs of condensation anywhere.

I can put my hand on the blades and mid afternoon after they’ve been running and they are cool to the touch …. No heat.

The bowing is a concern of mine as well. When I initially made it, it didn’t seem like it would be an issue, but after two or three days, I noticed a little bit of a sag in the middle….. my thought was to potentially create an entire frame and just add the blade clips to the middle to support it. I will update with pictures once I get that completed.

That's a pretty slick solution! Are you doing any sort of monitoring of the tank? I'd be really interested in seeing the pH fluctuations throughout the day given the circulation solution you came up with.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the Blades. On the longer models this seems like a design oversight not including some sort of center support (or a more rigid linear support similar to an "i" beam for instance).

Thanks for the information, really enjoying this build so far and I'm sure it'll keep on shaping up! Have a great weekend, and wishing you many more safe flights :)

Condolences on the old fish tank!

My father had a 200+ gallon fully mature system full of tangs, angelfish, etc. back in the 70s or 80s. He had a buddy crashing with him at the time. My dad was at work and the guy decided to treat the tank as a wishing well. He came home and noticed fish dying, replaced them. The whole tank crashed and he couldn't figure out why until after he took the whole system apart and found a solitary copper penny. He left the hobby after that and probably sold the tank for cheap.

I like the tablet idea for the apex system. I was toying with the idea of doing a similar thing with a raspberry pi when my tank is further along. How are you liking it so far?

Lighting Update 2.0 !!

So I originally installed my 48” Blades utilizing the end bolt holes. I used a U shaped channel and an L shaped channel to create a “slide” for the lights…. However … after installed, I realized …. The slide didn’t slide…. It kinda scooted and bound up. (Metal on Metal) ….

So after sitting here staring at it for about a month now… a 2am Amazon shopping spree led me to this new setup.

Works amazing !!! The lights now slide with ease out of the way for accessing the tank.
