A terrible ending

I recently got a fish from a different store that I had never been to ( huge mistake ) an dc added it to the tank with the others. It was a white cheek tang and it was fine until aboug a week later something i haf never seen happened. It started getting white spots on it. Me not looking at all possible diseases assumed it was ich, and I have been freshwater dipping and trying to fight it for about a week. Now all of the sudden with out any apparent warning all my fish have glassy eyes and look to be sprayed a white color as if they got laminated in sand sort of. I callec the lfs and he said I had marine velvet. How could I have been so dumb! Ive been fighting the wrong diseases and now mh fish ive had for so long are dropping like flies. Even the copperband that looked like a perfectly healthy fish all along is dead and covered in the specks oneday when I get home before I even know it was having problems. I know there is not much I can do now but make sure the next thing I buy in a few months is a qt tank. I spent all this money on expensive fish a not a dime on an extra tank. How smart of me. I wont be making this mistake again.

I forgot to add it could be worse, atleast the coral and inverts are fine.

so sorry for your losses :( many hobbyists have experienced a rapid spread of disease and unfortunatley velvet is probably the worst....it spreads and kills rapidly usually giving little time for effective treatment. I think QT is the only way to really prevent this type of event in the future. Try not to be too hard on yourself and just know what you need to do in the future to prevent future fatalities.

Im sorry you had this happen in your tank i think we forget how fragile our tanks can be i hope you find some relief in.knowing your unfortunate situation has inspired me to start a qt tank of my own. Good luck.

The best part of an extermination is we get the chance to rebuild with a fresh start (not sure where i heard it but it sounds good for this situation )

Its deffinently a learning expierence and Im very glad it convinced you to setup a qt tank. Its so much easier than losing your whole tank. I plan on making the most of it though and im seeing maybe sps dominated in the future?:)

I'm so sorry! I got a tang and was lucky it didn't get a single disease, but in the future I would NEVER NOT quarantine a tang.

Well !!! Not everything lol only cuz i just started my.qt tank yest and my lfs just had a misorder of rbta and hes practically.giving them away. Soooo thurs ill probably be buying a couple

I have a 120 gal. tank and a 20 gal. qt and I still will not buy a tang. as much as I love them it's just not worth the risk. too many beautiful fish to choose from without these ich magnets.

You don't have to be afraid of tangs. Tank transfer works great and you can be assured that your fish is Ich free pretty easily. Any fish can bring Ich in to your tank, tangs are just a little more susceptible.

I had a white cheek tang and after a week started to show white spots on it. I thought it was ich, didn't have a qt tank. It ended up dying and infected more fish in my 220. Now I'm down to my blue hippo and 2 pajama cardinals. The white cheek look good when I bought it from a guy on another forum. I'm going to steer clear of white cheeks in the future. I'm also waiting a couple of months for everything to clear up and then restock the tank. Going to buy some fish from LFS that I'm good friends with that will qt for me since I don't have room for a gt at my fiances parents house in which we're house sitting for. Lucky enough to let me setup the 220 in the living room and run the overflows and returns into the crawlspace/wine cellar where my sump and return pump are.

Unluckily I got hit by this disease recently too, lost almost every fish except for 3 Chromis. A very expensive lesson to learn for not having a qt =(

I recently just set up a QT for the first time after having salt water since the 90's, ( kind of ashamed to admit that). Anyway I just bought a cheap 10 gallon, made a DIY sponge filter and added some dried rock I had and one piece of live rock. I have an old light fixture but not even using it since the tank gets ambient light from a window. It consumes little energy since it only has a small air pump and its ready to go when I need to QT something. I may use it to house live food for my seahorses when I go away too.

I think the same thing is going to happen to me. I have three chromis my least favorite and peast expensive fish, tgat seem to be healty while everything else is dying
