Hey guys!

Today I added a pair of black ice clownfish to the 40 gallon breeder after double checking my ammonia and nitrites levels before and everything looked good. They are finally in the tank and would love to get some tips and advice from fellow clownfish lovers.

Currently in the tank I have about 20-30lbs of live rock, 50 lbs of live sand, 3 nassarius snails, 2 turbo snails, the two clownfish, and a 850gph powerhead for additional water flow.

Any tips and advice would be appreciated!

Congrats. Those are nice fish. It looks like your aquarium is young. So my best advice is: don’t go out and get an anemone yet!

Thank you Scott! And yeah my aquarium is pretty young and will do! I heard it takes about 6 months-1 year before you want to add an anemone so I am taking my time and making sure my water parameters are stable before I add them.

They are the only fish in the tank right now so this is pretty much their quarantine tank lol. Will definitely look up for signs of velvet and brook though losing my fish is the last thing I want.

Thank you!

Yeah. Your tank is nice and white now. But after awhile you get brown diatoms in your sand. Then algae. And a stage that people call “the uglies”. It’s all part of it. But your parameters will swing as you correct the problems. Then after around 6 months, things calm down. Sort of. This is just a rough guideline of what to expect. Everyone’s tank and husbandry are different. Good luck! Keep posting pics.

Thanks again Scott, appreciate it

Already seeing some diatoms in the sand bed and I heard about “the uglies” but like you said it’s all part of the process. So pretty much it won’t be till a long time till I can add an anemone lol. And will definitely keep posting pics!

I think you’ll know when the time is right. You kind become one with your tank so to speak. You’ll probably make mistakes and just need to learn from them. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s just how you deal with them.

Become one with the tank... I mean we already share the same room and she uses all my money lol. But I agree I will probably make mistakes as it’s a big learning curve but I have been researching a lot of other people’s mistakes so I can learn from their experiences and try to prevent it from happening in my tank.

I’ve always kept fish only tanks. I decided to try corals last year. I forgot how easy fish only tanks were. But I made lots of mistakes and killed quite a few corals along the way. And I’m still making mistakes. But it’s fun and I love this hobby.

I’m pretty new to R2r but I can see why it’s so addicting. I could look at my tank all day even though there’s not much in there and have the time of my life lol.

You guys say this and laugh but i hate to be the party pooper.. just wait until you lose near 1000$ in fish from ich or velvet or something.. lol. Like i said be careful and QT fish and dip corals.

You laugh now at saying your tank is a QT now.. and i get the sarcasm lol.. but in all seriousness i said the same exact thing.. And i had thr impatient bug of wanting fish and anemones and stuff...

until i lost 600+ in fish and i had listend to ppl who dont know what their doing by feeding fish more and doing garlic and herbal treatments for 3 months because i didnt want to QT.. Trust me that crap doesnt work

only to finally listen to experienced people and QT and do hyposalinity for 2 months.. so for 5 months i delt with this crap.

It isnt fun trust me. Youll regret it before long

Beautiful fish! Here is some great information on quarantining, if you do end up needing to treat for diseases you will want to do it in a separate qt tank and not the display. Good luck!

Thanks you sailfin,

I agree losing fish after all the time and money you have put into providing them a good home will definitely be discouraging to the new hobbyists. I will be careful and looking for a cheap setup I can do for quarantine tank when I plan on adding more fish and corals and anemones. I’m aware that it won’t be for a long time till I can as I want to make sure I have good water change habits, and the water parameters are solid before introducing them to my babies.
