Hi everyone -

I have a question regarding AI Prime 16HD lights in 2025. I am looking to upgrade my light over my IM15 cube. I currently have a Fluval Nano reef light which is ok. Looking for more power to handle different corals.

I really like the specs on the AI Prime, however the reviews are not the greatest. I see lots of melted lenses being a common issue. Is this an issue of the past that has been corrected or will I most likely experience this issue? The AI Prime is at the top of my $$ range while it is on sale at 15% off. If the issues remain with this light, can anyone offer any other quality suggestions?

Thanks!

I have one I have been using for 4 or 5 years now, never melted a lens (knock on wood) Max output, maybe 80%?
I don't grow sticks or anything that requires high par, but the ease is amazing as far as application use etc.

I'd say it's a good option, the lenses do seem to have actually improved, dont run anything at 100% or over and they won't melt. If you want higher light intensity get two or get a different light. IME they take awhile to break in so the fan can be quite loud for awhile. A lens replacement is only $3 if they do melt.
People recommend noopsyche and nicrew for budget friendly lights but I have no experience with them, they seem solid though.

I like my AI Primes. The compact size, solid par, adjustable spectrum and easy to use app, make it a solid choice. I have melted the UV and Violet lenses, but only after years of use and neglecting my fans. On your 15 IM, there should be no reason to Jack them up high enough to melt lenses. One and done. I use mine with shades and diffusers and still have plenty of light for some lower light demanding SPS corals.

I decided to place an order for my new light today! I am going with a black AI prime. I am excited to see what I am capable of keeping with this new light. I am sure that it will be better than the Fluval Marine Nano that I have been using! Thanks for the insight to your experiences using the AI prime!

It is a decent light for a smaller tank, nice app. I had it over a 15g water box and never ran over 80%

It melted a lens twice. Fan was kept clean. I got fed up and went a different direction in 2024

Noo-Psyche k7 pro iii

IMO the light is much better and more powerful, but the app is garbage.

The prime I liked making tweaks easily and simply. The noop…well this is a set and forget. Set it up then don’t touch it again lol. It’s good light though and has a glass lens.

Honestly not 100% happy with either but both are good choices and will get the job done

Come back on and search here for settings. Also look on YouTube. I think the BRS recommend settings are OK, but there are better ones. Many start with the signature series Saxby settings then change them a bit to taste.

16hds are the leds that got me off of halides. I'm 100% leds now.
I ran 2 over my old 18" nano cube, 4 over my 36×24 frag system, 2 over my old 30g remote.
I have 2 used and 1 new in the box 16hd In the garage.
I was going to put one over my IM 15 but went with one of my used xr15's.
I ran the 16's at first 4 100% and the rest 50%. I melted a few lens above 100%.

You will have no problem growing whatever you want with your new 16hd on your IM15.

Good luck and start a build thread so we can all follow.

I run 3 IM systems now and 1 Red Sea nano. A ext 170, ext 50, and an IM 15.

My old 18" 20g nano cube and my current new IM 15 and old 30g remote, and old frag system

Even if you brown a lens, they are just a few bucks on the AI site. I replaced mine in Primes and 32HDs. They are good lights. The prime is great for smaller tanks. I used one on a waterbox 25 pen. Loved it.

I would use the acclimation mode feature when you first switch to the new light. You wouldn’t want to blast anything with too much PAR if there is a large difference between your new and old light.

The Prime 16HD is actually a great light. It packs a nice punch and a lot of features for not a ton of money. In that tank, with that light, you'll be able to grow anything you want to grow.

The lens melt can still be an issue, but if you keep it clean, you can minimize it ... AND ... @luxdium is coming out with a new, unmeltable lens any time now. Run the light for a bit, then upgrade the lens when they're available and never worry about lens melt. Ever.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and watch the BRS video on the 16HD. Watch the whole video. Twice. You'll come away with a pretty deep understanding of how the light works, and how to get the most out of it. They test it over a 12" cube tank and an 18" cube tank. Your tank falls right in the middle, so you should be able to pretty easily guess where you need to be.

Exactly the video I used to dial in my 16's when I started.
