I am planning on ordering this air powered protein skimmer because it is simple to use.

But what does this piece in the orange circle do?

This is something you would use while going away. So as big as needed to not overflow while you’re gone.

Also, does anyone here know if they make a larger kind of air powered protein skimmer for larger tanks (29 gallons - 40 gallons)?

This is a good lower budget skimmer. This is the cheapest skimmer I would use. In a system this small a skimmer is not required and can be taken care of with water changes IMHO

I don’t recommend the air stone ones. While they can produce some skimmate, the wooden air stone needs to be rejuvenated and then replaced. I found it to be more work than it is worth. They were great option for nanos when they were the ONLY option. Now we have better that won’t require constantly replacing the wooden air stone.
