I have been having algae issues for a couple months now I have not been doing water changes as frequently because I have been focused on other projects I have tried dosing with chemiclean but it has had little to no effect

Sounds like the system was on the edge of a bloom and cutting back water changes was just a "tipping point". The proverbial straw...of camel fame. You know. ;)

What's your cleanup crew like?

What's the tank's fish load like? (details pls)

How much are you feeding the tank? (details again)

And what size is the tank?
