I have this stuff that grows out of the water on my overflow and return. I can clean it off but it will return. Just not sure if I even need to be cleaning it off. It's kind of hairy and smells sorta like nori.

If the hairs are stiff it is probably bryopsis . Not pretty but won't hurt anything. I have it in the same place and on my returns. I just pull it off when I do water changes. I think of it a a way to export nutrients as long as it stays there and doesn't spread to the rest of my tank.
