Any one have an epic lawn....?

Yea this years winter weeds wrecked havoc on my lawn. I'm actually seeding the other side of my driveway tonight after the sun goes down. I killed everything(was mostly weeds with Bermuda) about a month ago with 2 applications of glyphosphate. So I have to finish raking up the dead stuff and lay the seed. Have malorganite and 10-10-10 starter fert ready to go down with it

i did a controlled burn and torched my entire lawn when i missed a fall treatment of preemergent.

that kentucky bluegrass is aids to my lawn.

never missed a fall application since.

You have to cut it, than you fertilize it to grow greener and better than your neighbor, if it does you have to cut it twice a week :mad:
You got to water it which cost lots of money for water, and fertilize again.
In the summer it can get chinch bugs :( and in the winter brown patch........... not to mention the other deceases and weeds that will take over.
It won't bloom, it ain't pretty and some ppl are allergic to grass pollen.
No I stick with all my weeds that flower year round and it will take me only 15 min a week to maintain.............. that is if you know what your doing :rolleyes:

Man!!! That is awesome! Reminds me of my grandparents house. They have an oasis in their back yard with bookoo Japanese and bonsai maples, and other greenery/plants

Lol I def want something similar in my back yard. I love koi ponds also and want to incorporate that into the scape. But I do still like having a front lawn. I would like to see the back haha I give you permission as I created it :D

Everything ripped out took 900lbs to the dump

At this point anything besides what I have haha! It's going to be a good amount of work and I'm going to have to look into it a lot more. My soil is very sandy and acidic. I also have a lot of shade so that's another thing I need to account for. It's going to take a good amount of work but I'm always up for a challenge and it will be worth it in the end.

I see you are in the north so you will have a different type of seed to look at than me.
I actually just finished throwing out some centipede seed about a half hour ago. It was only 450sqft, but sheesh raking and mowing all the weed/grass that I killed to the dirt was some serious work!

Yup the north east south jersey to be exact. The blueberry capital of the world is the next town over. So sandy acidic soil is what I'm working with. I think I'm going to start with some lime treatments to get things ready and go talk to give turf shop that happens to be in front of my shop to come up with a good seed mix for me. I have about 10k square feet so its definitly going to be a big under taking. Looking forward to see how you make out!

i think fall is the biggest time to do it.
i keep my lawn around 6 inches during the fall and spread preemergent october/november.

if you dont... you will be fighting fires until summer.

spring pre emergent is just to give it a boost.

Maybe I misread this. You keep your Bermuda at 6" tall during the fall?

I have maintained southern turf for 15 years professionally and have never kept Bermuda nor centipede over 2". In fact, my walker mower won't cut above 3.5" and my tru cut real mower stays at 1". St. Augustine ime is best at 3" and zoysia is 1-2" depending on variety. My empire zoysia is cut at 1" during the spring and fall. And 1.5" during thr summer.

My pre-emerge schedule is October and February 15th. Dimension is applied the first week of May with a fertilizer. And atrazine is applied in late December or early January for control of poa annua.

In the past I have kept my centipede shorter, around 2" or so, but I cut a little taller this year because I wanted to play around with striping. Honestly now that I have been cutting it around 3" it is growing in way thicker than it used to be. I know it is recommended at 2" but I'm not seeing anything negative yet

Pre emergent sounds like getting up to early...I mow 3 acres it was a good idea 10 years ago! Now when I'm finished it looks good but I think it's a whole week before I have to do that again...lol

Well that explains the two brown patches in my original post haha....I dethatched in April and over seeded the Bermuda areas that were thinning and brown with centipede. So I take it if I keep mowing higher the centipede will choke out the Bermuda?

yup... looks like this until mid march when i scalp it.

2nd or 3rd mow after scalping.

Bermuda can be choked out by centipede. Centipede is just so slow to spread. I use Lesco brands as well as some Anderson brands also I like using liquid fertilizer sometimes. Some thin spots I occasionally use a hose end sprayer with miracle gro.

I also apply a pesticide atleast annually as a preventative. My favorite is imidacloprid. I buy concentrate but the Bayer advanced works fine as well.

I had Zoysia down last year do to utility work done in my backyard and I love it. Very heat tolerant and weeds won't hardly grow in it, it chocks it out when the grass green's back up. It doesn't stay green all year round but it's like walking on carpet when it greens up. JMO
