A little bored tonight, so I thought I'd share a table I made for an odd sized dining area. Made the banquet against the wall also. The base of the table matches the coffee table I made.

David, for the table top, is that stained poplar? Or what type of wood did you piece together?

It is stained poplar, 1x2's biscuit joined together. My wife wanted the "zebra" look to it so I cheated a little, knowing poplar doesn't stain evenly. It worked out perfectly because she was happy with it, and when she's happy, I get new tools!!!

It turned out well. I have a friend that did stained poplar for his kitchen counters that were jointed together and it turned out very nice.

Here is a music/jewelry box that I just now finished the inlay on. This will be ready for finishing in a few days. It is mostly Cherry with a Maple top. Inlay is Mahogany.

He wanted an old rustic look for his man cave.

Rough-sawn Pine with various stains and glazes.
Stiles and rails are 5" with varying widths on the full thickness panels.

So a question for the experienced carpenters. I'm building a stand for my 180gal, 6'x2'x2' tank. I don't want a center brace in from. I'm thinking of spanning both the front side and bank side with 2"x6" glued and deck screwed to 2"x4"s. Am I crazy or is this still overkill

Here is a new frag tank stand I built today. It's 42 1/2" tall. 24 wide and 48 long. Will house a 60 gallon frag.

Table is beautiful! I am curious why you used shellac? Shellac has an alcohol base and any spills of alcoholic drinks would leave a ring or mark.

Actually it doesn't. I mix my own shellac and it takes days for shellac flakes to dissolve in pure alcohol. I've done experiments using vodka (the cheap stuff ;)) and put it on shellaced oak for 10 minutes, 30 minutes and until total evaporation. None of them had any effect. The alcohol starts evaporating as soon as it hits the air and doesn't have the strength or contact time to make any sort of impression.

This is the stand I built for my 180. I should have some other pics. I will have to look. I did use 4x4s in the corners.
