Hey guys! Figured I would start a thread to determine what value API tests are showing. Since we all see color a little differently we can basically crowd source the opinions of other and get a more accurate number. This is my first example. What the heck is the ph value for this?

Hello,

From the photo I would definitely say an 8.0 but have your lfs do cross check to make sure your test is accurate. Have them do one from a different api kit then test with a different source. As much as I see some hate api they are convient, fast and pretty darn accurate. Each tank works within a range so numbers don’t need to be exact. Chasing numbers is a horrible habit to get into, don’t do it.
Since I use api test daily so I’m kinda use to their testing etc. generslly I don’t hold the vile up against the paper because it does make it darker per say. But I do hold it fairly close (1/2) or closer. Another good habit is to make sure you shake the bottles well and check the expiration dates as well. The nitrate is the one you really need pay attention to. Definitely shake it for 30 seconds (bottle 2) then after your ten drops shake it for 60 seconds. I actually time mine every time and 9/10 times it’s pretty darn close. Now I have crossed referenced these with my lfs who used api and redsea to make sure my tests were accurate. There was no difference from api to api. There was a slight difference from the redsea pro kit to api. However, I don’t have 30 minutes to waste testing each time. As long as I’m in the ball park my tank has always been just fine. Chasing numbers is and has never been a good thing. I test often because I manually dose everything by hand in my tank. It’s simple, and more accurate and my tank has done great.
